Single Dad Thought the Blind Date Was Over — Until She Arrived and Revealed She Was His Date….
A Frosty Beginning and the Wrong Date
Single dad thought the blind date was over until she arrived and revealed she was his blind date. Before we continue, please tell us: where in the world are you tuning in from? We love seeing how far our stories travel.
Owen Mitchell sat in his truck outside the Evergreen Steakhouse on December 20th at 6:45. He was staring at the Christmas lights like they were personally mocking him.
He was about 3 seconds away from just driving home and telling his best friend, Travis, he got food poisoning or his chore. He wanted literally anything that didn’t involve admitting he was too terrified to walk through those doors.
Snow was coming down in those big fat flakes that make everything look like a Hallmark movie. Except Owen’s life was definitely not a Hallmark movie.
Those don’t include an 8-year-old daughter’s writing letters to Santa asking for someone to make their dad smile again. His phone buzzed with another text from Travis, who’d been harassing him all day.
“You promised Harper don’t make me tell your daughter you’re a coward.”
“Lowblow man.”
Travis just sent the shrugging emoji.
“Get in there Her name’s Autumn Be nice.”
Owen looked at himself in the rearview mirror. His tie was crooked because he never wore ties anymore. Not since four years ago.
He looked exactly like a guy about to bail on a blind date he never wanted to go on in the first place. Here’s the thing about losing your wife right before Christmas: it destroys every Christmas after that.
Or at least Owen thought so until Harper started leaving notes around the house. She was asking Santa for things like “daddy to smile again” instead of toys.
It absolutely wrecked him because his kid was using her Christmas wish to try and fix her broken father. Jessica died December 23rd, 4 years ago. There was black ice on the highway while she was getting last-minute presents.
Owen hadn’t been able to look at Christmas the same way since. He just went through the motions so Harper wouldn’t know he was falling apart.
He forced himself out of the truck because he pinky promised Harper that morning. Mitchell’s don’t break pinky promises.
He walked into a restaurant decorated within an inch of its life. Garland and lights were everywhere. Christmas music was playing just loud enough to remind you it’s the most wonderful time of the year, even when you feel like complete garbage.
The hostess said his date hadn’t arrived yet. Owen sat at the bar and ordered a beer he didn’t want while trying not to look at all the happy couples having their perfect Christmas dates.
7:15 came and went. Owen was texting Travis.
“I don’t think I can do this Feels like I’m cheating on Jess.”
“She’s been gone 4 years She’d want you happy Don’t you dare leave.”
7:20 the door opened and a woman walked in shaking snow off her coat. She looked around nervously, made eye contact with Owen, smiled, and walked straight over.
“Are you Owen?” she asked.
“Yeah Autumn.”
Travis hadn’t shown him a picture. He just said, “Trust me she’s great.”
The woman laughed.
“Close enough.”
She sat down next to him. They started talking and it just flowed. It was easy conversation like they’d known each other forever.
She mentioned dealing with staffing issues at work. Owen relaxed and told her about Harper playing a reindeer in the school Christmas pageant.
He spoke about how his daughter still believed in Christmas magic even though Owen wasn’t sure he did anymore. The woman asked about his wife straight up.
She just asked if it was okay to talk about and Owen appreciated that so much he almost cried right there at the bar.
“4 years ago December 23rd car accident getting Christmas presents,” he said. “The holidays are really hard for me but I fake it for my kid.”
The woman squeezed his hand.
“Maybe you’re here to find some of that magic again.”
Owen felt something unlock in his chest that had been stuck for years. They talked about grief and single parenting and how Christmas makes everything bigger.
Owen was thinking, “Travis was right She’s amazing How did I almost skip this.”
At 7:50 her phone rang and she looked panicked.
“I’m so sorry kitchen emergency I have to handle this right now.”
Owen blinked because that was weird for a nurse to say, but she was already leaving. She asked for his number and said she wanted to continue the conversation.
Owen sat there feeling actual hope for the first time in forever. He texted Travis.
“You were right man She’s incredible.”
“Wait you like her Is she still there?”
“Had to step away for work but yeah we really connected.”
“Work Dude Autumn’s a nurse She’s off tonight What are you talking about.”
Owen looked up and saw the woman wearing a manager name tag talking to kitchen staff. He realized with horror he’d been talking to the wrong person this entire time.
“Autumn’s car died on I7 She’s been stuck in the snow for 45 minutes trying to get there.”
Owen wanted to disappear because this was the most embarrassing moment of his entire life. He was about to leave when the front door opened.
A woman stumbled in absolutely covered in snow with hair soaked and mascara smudged. She was shivering hard, clutching her phone and a wet, crushed gift.
The whole restaurant went quiet because she looked like she’d walked through a blizzard. She spotted Owen and walked over, leaving wet footprints.
“Owen I’m Autumn I’m so sorry I’m late My car died and I’ve been trying to get here for an hour.”
“And I know this is the worst first impression but I promised I’d be here And I don’t break promises especially not before Christmas.”
She was breathless and mortified. Owen just stared because this woman had clearly been through hell to get here. She was apologizing to him, a complete stranger.
“You still came.”
Owen’s voice came out amazed.
“You could have just cancelled You look like you walked through a storm.”
Autumn laughed kind of hysterical.
“I hitched with a trucker and walked two miles because my little sister’s waiting to hear how this went.”
“And I couldn’t let her down I couldn’t give up because things got hard.”
She held out the crushed gift.
“I brought you this It’s dumb but I couldn’t show up empty-handed at Christmas.”
Owen unwrapped it with shaking hands and found a silver compass ornament engraved “find your way home.” His throat closed up because Jessica used to say that exact phrase.
The restaurant manager walked by laughing.
“You must be his actual date I’m Maya We had a mixup He thought I was you Merry Christmas.”
Autumn looked at Owen, confused and amused.
“You thought she was me?”
“My friend didn’t show me a picture I’m sorry Weirdest start to a date ever.”
Autumn laughed for real.
“I walked two miles looking like a drowned rat We’re even on weird.”
