CEO’s Blind Date Cancelled by Shy Caregiver—Until He Found Her Crying in the Parking Lot with 2 Kids
A Disappointing Start and An Unexpected Discovery
The restaurant was one of those upscale places where the lighting was carefully designed to be flattering. Every table had fresh flowers and the prices on the menu made most people wince.
Brandon Mitchell didn’t notice the prices. As CEO of Mitchell Tech Solutions, a software company he’d built from the ground up, money had stopped being a concern years ago.
What did concern him was whether this blind date would be another waste of his time. Brandon was 34 years old with dark brown hair and an athletic build.
He maintained his physique through early morning gym sessions before heading to the office. He wore a gray t-shirt and jeans tonight, deliberately casual.
His assistant had told him this date was with someone normal and someone grounded. She was not another socialite looking for a wealthy husband.
He’d been skeptical but agreed. His love life had been a series of disappointing encounters with women more interested in his bank account than his personality.
At some point he’d started to wonder if genuine connection was even possible when you had money. He checked his phone for the third time at 7:45.
His date was 15 minutes late. This was not a huge deal as traffic happened, but usually people sent a text if they were running behind.
At 8:00 his phone finally buzzed with a message from an unknown number. “mr mitchell this is Sophia Reyes i’m so sorry but I need to cancel our date tonight.”
“something’s come up with my kids i apologize for the late notice please have a nice evening.” Brandon stared at the message feeling a mixture of disappointment and relief.
Part of him had been hoping this one might be different. Relief came because now he could go home, change into comfortable clothes, and catch up on work.
He avoided the social obligation of small talk with a stranger. He texted back, “No problem hope everything is okay with your kids.”
Then he paid for the glass of wine he’d ordered and left a generous tip. He headed out to the parking lot where his car waited.
The parking lot was mostly empty now, illuminated by tall lights that cast pools of brightness in the darkness. Brandon was walking toward his car when he heard it.
He heard the sound of a child crying and a woman’s voice trying to soothe them. He paused, looking around and spotted them near the edge of the parking lot.
A woman sat on the curb next to an older sedan holding a little girl who was sobbing into her shoulder. A boy maybe five or six stood next to them looking scared and uncertain.
The woman herself looked like she was barely holding it together. Brandon’s first instinct was to keep walking.
This wasn’t his problem. The woman had clearly canceled their date, probably making up the excuse about her kids to avoid meeting him.
Now here she was with actual kids, so maybe it hadn’t been an excuse after all. But he couldn’t walk away, not when a child was crying.
He could not leave when the woman looked so defeated. He approached slowly, not wanting to startle them.
“excuse me are you okay do you need help.” The woman looked up and Brandon felt his breath catch.
She was probably in her late 20s with light brown hair that fell in waves past her shoulders. She wore a cream colored blouse and looked exhausted and overwhelmed.
Her eyes were red from crying. When she saw him, recognition and mortification crossed her face.
“mr mitchell,” she said her voice breaking. “i’m so sorry i didn’t mean for you to see this i was just about to leave i swear.”
“you’re Sophia Reyes,” Brandon said putting the pieces together. “my date the one who canled.”
Sophia nodded miserably, wiping her eyes with one hand while still holding the crying little girl with the other. “i’m so embarrassed i wanted to meet you i really did but my babysitter got sick at the last minute.”
“And I couldn’t find anyone else and I thought maybe I could bring the kids and keep them in the car for just an hour.” “But then Maya started crying because she wanted to see me.”
“And I realized how stupid that was trying to have a date with my kids waiting in the car.” “And then the car wouldn’t start.”
She broke off, overwhelmed, and started crying herself.
