Poor Dad Made Her Laugh At A Party, Not Knowing She Was A Billionaire Falling Hard

A Spark of Laughter Amidst the Elite

The laughter that burst from Mueller Reynolds was genuine, the kind that made nearby guests turn their heads in curiosity. It wasn’t the polite, restrained chuckle typical of these high society charity galas, but an unguarded sound of pure delight.

It seemed out of place among the crystal chandeliers and designer gowns.

“That’s the worst dad joke I’ve ever heard,” she said, wiping the corner of her eye while still grinning, “and somehow the best at the same time.”

Across from her, Blake Osborne looked pleasantly surprised at her reaction. He hadn’t expected such enthusiasm for his admittedly terrible pun about the catering.

Wearing a slightly worn but well-cared-for suit that had seen better days, Blake stood out among the sea of tailored tuxedos. He was only here because he’d been asked to fill in as a server at the last minute—a job he desperately needed.

“Sorry, I probably shouldn’t be talking to the guests,” Blake said, straightening his posture and remembering his place. “I’m just here serving drinks tonight.”,

Mila waved her hand dismissively.

“Please, you’ve just saved me from the most mind-numbing conversation about hedge fund strategies. I’m grateful.”

Blake couldn’t help but notice her eyes, warm brown with flecks of gold that caught the light. Her elegant black dress was simple but obviously expensive, and yet there was something refreshingly unpretentious about her presence.

“Happy to help,” he replied, offering her a fresh glass of champagne from his tray. “Though I should probably keep circulating before my boss notices.”

“Of course,” Mila nodded. “Though if you have any more terrible jokes, I’ll be by the fountain in the garden in about 20 minutes. These events can be suffocating.”

Blake hesitated. Talking with guests wasn’t just discouraged; it could cost him this job. As a single dad with a six-year-old daughter waiting at home with a babysitter he could barely afford, risks weren’t something he could afford to take.

“I have a whole arsenal of bad jokes,” he found himself saying anyway. “Occupational hazard of being a dad.”,

Her smile widened.

“You have children?”

“A daughter, Lily. She’s six and thinks my jokes are still funny, though I suspect I only have a year or two before she starts rolling her eyes at them.”

“Smart girl,” Mila said with a wink. “20 minutes. Garden fountain.”

Before Blake could respond, she was swept away by a silver-haired man in an impeccable suit, leaving him to wonder if he’d imagined the entire interaction.

Back in the kitchen, Blake’s friend and coworker Tomas nudged him.

“Dude, was that Mueller Reynolds you were talking to?”

Blake shrugged.

“She didn’t mention her name. Why?”

Tomas stared at him in disbelief.

“That’s Mueller Reynolds, as in Reynolds Technologies. The woman is worth billions, man. She rarely shows up at these things, and when she does, she never talks to anyone for more than two minutes unless they’re about to write her a massive check.”

Blake nearly dropped his tray.

“You’re kidding.”

“Not even a little bit. She took over her father’s company three years ago and tripled its value. Forbes called her the most enigmatic CEO under 40. What did you say to her?”,

“I made a stupid joke about the caviar looking like fish eyeballs,” Blake admitted.

Tomas laughed.

“Well, whatever works. Just don’t get fired for fraternizing with the guests, especially not that guest.”
