Single Dad Accidentally Heard the Boss Whisper It’s Been So Long Since Anyone Taken Care of Like This
The Overheard Whisper and the Unexpected Crisis
The sound of her voice cracked with vulnerability as she whispered those words thinking no one could hear but James did hear standing frozen outside her office door the stack of reports clutched tightly against his chest. It’s been so long since anyone’s taken care of me like this.
Those words from his normally composed formidable boss would change everything between them though neither knew it yet.
Your support means everything. James Parker hadn’t planned on eavesdropping.
At 38 he was simply trying to survive balancing his job as a financial analyst at Westbrook Enterprises with raising his 10-year-old daughter Lily after his wife’s death 3 years ago. He certainly hadn’t planned on developing feelings for Victoria Westbrook the CEO who had inherited her father’s company and carried its weight on her shoulders.
She carried it with seemingly effortless grace. The morning had started like any other.
James had woken at 5:30 a.m. prepared Lily’s lunch helped her with last minute homework and dropped her off at school before rushing to make his 8:00 a.m. meeting. His mother-in-law was supposed to pick Lily up after school but she’d called with a doctor’s appointment she couldn’t reschedule.
“i’m so sorry James,” she’d said genuine regret in her voice “i know you have that big presentation today”. “It’s okay Carol,” he’d assured her though his mind was already racing through the impossible logistics.
The presentation to the board was at 4:00 p.m. and school let out at 3:15. Even if he left immediately after he’d never make it back in time.
When he arrived at work the office was buzzing with nervous energy. The quarterly review was critical.
The company had been struggling since losing a major client and rumors of layoffs had everyone on edge. James couldn’t afford to lose this job not with Lily’s braces coming up and the mortgage payments that kept him awake at night.
He was reviewing his presentation one last time when his phone buzzed with a text from Lily’s school. She wasn’t feeling well could he pick her up.
His heart sank as this couldn’t be happening today. That’s when Victoria had appeared at his cubicle immaculate in her tailored navy suit her dark hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail.
“james do you have the Henderson projections ready the board’s asking for them before the meeting”. He looked up at her trying to mask his panic.
“yes they’re right here i just need to”. His phone buzzed again lily’s school.
Victoria’s sharp eyes caught the worry on his face. “is everything all right”.
He hadn’t meant to tell her. Victoria Westbrook wasn’t known for her patience with personal problems interfering with work but something in her expression made him honest.
“my daughter’s sick at school i need to pick her up but the board presentation to”. To his surprise Victoria’s expression softened.
“go get your daughter i’ll handle the presentation”. “but Miss Westbrook these are my projections the board will have questions”.
“then brief me on the way to your car i’m perfectly capable of delivering your findings”. 20 minutes later James had explained everything Victoria needed to know as they walked to the parking garage.
When they reached his car she’d surprised him again. “text me when you’ve picked up your daughter let me know she’s okay”.
He’d stared at her seeing something in her eyes he’d never noticed before concern yes but something else something almost like longing. “thank you” he’d said meaning it more than she could know.
Lily had been pale and feverish when he picked her up but by evening her temperature had dropped and she was sleeping peacefully. James had texted Victoria updates throughout the afternoon receiving brief but surprisingly warm responses.
The presentation she’d informed him had gone well. The next morning he’d arrived early determined to thank her properly and apologize for the inconvenience.
