Single Dad Replaced for Blind Date by Mistake, Until She Stepped in and Revealed as his Old Frien

The Table 14 Mix-Up

Alec Mitchell sat at table 14 in the Bridgeport Bistro at 7:00 p.m. on a Saturday night. He stared at the menu like it was written in a foreign language. He was seriously considering texting his sister Rachel that he had a work emergency or his car wouldn’t start.

He considered literally any excuse that would let him escape this blind date he never should have agreed to in the first place. The restaurant was all exposed brick and soft jazz playing in the background. Rain was tapping against the windows in that moody Portland way.

Every couple around him looked comfortable and happy while Alec felt like he was wearing someone else’s skin. His phone buzzed with another text from Rachel. His sister had been harassing him for weeks to do this.

The text said: “Her name’s Hannah she’s amazing don’t you dare bail on this.”

Alec typed back: “I’m here aren’t I?”

But his finger hovered over the send button. Being here and actually wanting to be here were two very different things. He had been raising Maya alone for four years now ever since he lost his wife Claire.

Dating felt like learning to walk again after forgetting how your legs worked. It was awkward and painful and why bother when you could just stay still? A woman walked up to his table right at 7:15 with blonde hair and a nice smile.

She was clearly looking for someone and she said: “Alec?”

There was a hopeful uptick in her voice. Alec stood up because his mom raised him right even if he was internally panicking.

“Hannah?”

The woman nodded.

“Yes sorry I’m late traffic on the bridge was absolutely insane.”

She slid into the seat across from him. Alec thought, “Okay here we go let’s try to be a functional human being for at least an hour.” They made small talk, the kind of first date conversation that is all surface level and safe.

She worked in marketing for a tech startup and liked hiking on weekends. She had a dog named Biscuit. Alec shared that he was an architect specializing in sustainable housing. He had a 9-year-old daughter who was way smarter than him.

The woman laughed at the right moments and asked follow-up questions. She was perfectly nice and objectively attractive. She was the kind of person Rachel would absolutely set him up with. But Alec felt absolutely nothing.

He felt just a flat polite interest that made him feel guilty because she deserved someone who was actually present. Fifteen minutes into their perfectly pleasant conversation, the woman’s phone rang. She glanced at the screen and frowned.

“Sorry do you mind if I check this my friend was supposed to meet someone here tonight too.”

“No problem go ahead.”

Alec was grateful for the break from pretending to be engaged.

She answered with: “Hey where are you?”

Then her face changed. Confusion mixed with dawning horror.

“Wait you’re here at Bridgeport table 16?”

She looked across the restaurant where a confused looking guy was sitting alone checking his watch.

“Oh my god.”

The woman looked at Alec with wide eyes.

“What’s your last name?”

“Mitchell why?”

She covered her face with her hand.

“I’m supposed to be meeting Owen Parker i think I sat down at the wrong table i am so sorry this is mortifying.”

Alec started laughing because honestly this was the most interesting thing that had happened all night. The woman was laughing too. It was that kind of embarrassed laughter that happens when you realize you’ve been part of a sitcom mixup.

She stood up saying: “I’m Vanessa by the way and you seem really nice but I should probably go find my actual date.”

Alec was still smiling when another woman walked through the front door. He didn’t notice her at first because he was watching Vanessa navigate her way to table 16. Then this new woman just stopped dead in the middle of the restaurant.

She had her hand over her mouth like she had seen a ghost. She was shaking rain off her dark green jacket. Her brown hair was damp and wavy. She was staring directly at Alec with an expression he couldn’t quite read.

Shock mixed with something that looked almost like pain. She started walking toward him with slow careful steps like she was afraid he might disappear.

“Alec.”

Her voice came out shaky and uncertain.

“Alec Mitchell.”

Alec looked up at her, really looked. His brain was telling him he should know this person but the connection wasn’t firing.

“I’m sorry do I know you?”

The woman’s eyes were bright with tears she was clearly trying to hold back.

“It’s me it’s Hannah hannah Hayes from Lincoln High.”

Alec felt the floor tilt sideways because of Hannah Hayes. She was his Hannah Hayes from 20 years ago. She was his best friend who moved away senior year and who he had lost touch with.

He thought about her sometimes late at night, wondering where she ended up. He stood up so fast he nearly knocked his water glass over just staring at her face. Yeah, okay, now he could see it.

She had those same green eyes that used to roll at his terrible jokes. She had that same smile that always made him feel like he was funnier than he actually was. Except she was grown up now.

She was confident and beautiful in a way that made his chest tight.

“Hannah holy hell it’s really you.”

His voice cracked embarrassingly and he didn’t even care because Hannah Hayes was standing in front of him after two decades. His brain was trying to process how this was even possible.

Vanessa was still standing nearby, having not quite made it to table 16 yet.

“I’m guessing you two know each other.”

Hannah’s laugh came out more like a sob.

“We were best friends in high school i moved away 20 years ago and we we lost touch.”

She was looking at Alec like she couldn’t believe he was real either. Vanessa smiled genuine and warm.

“Well I think this is definitely your table then good luck you two.”

She left and Alec barely registered her leaving because Hannah was sitting down across from him. He was still trying to make his brain catch up to reality.

“I can’t believe this rachel set me up with you she didn’t say she just said someone perfect and I had no idea.”

Alec was talking too fast, words tumbling over each other. Hannah was nodding.

“She was my college roommate.”

“She said she knew someone who needed to get back out there i didn’t know it was you Alec i had no idea.”
