She’s House Sitting Next Door, Unaware The Vacation Neighbor Is A CEO Who’ll Want To Stay Near Her

A Quiet Escape and an Unexpected Neighbor

The sound of keys dropping echoed through the quiet suburban street as Harper Lawson fumbled with the mountain of bags in her arms. She had just arrived at her aunt’s pristine colonial home for a two-week house-sitting gig, desperate for a break from her cramped apartment and suffocating job.

As an elementary school art teacher, what had started as a simple favor—watering plants and collecting mail—suddenly felt like the escape she hadn’t known she needed.

“You’ve got this,” Harper muttered to herself, finally managing to unlock the front door and push it open with her hip.

The familiar scent of her aunt’s lavender candles welcomed her as she stepped inside. Aunt Maggie, her mother’s younger sister and a travel photographer, had left for a month-long assignment in the Maldives just yesterday.

She left Harper with detailed instructions about caring for her home and beloved Persian cat, Duchess. After dropping her bags in the guest bedroom, Harper wandered through the house, familiarizing herself with everything.

She saw the spacious kitchen with its marble countertops, the cozy living room overlooking the backyard, and the office filled with photographs from Aunt Maggie’s travels around the world. Harper had always admired her aunt’s adventurous spirit, something she felt she herself lacked.,

Standing at the kitchen window, Harper’s gaze drifted to the house next door. It was larger than her aunt’s, with a beautifully landscaped yard and a stunning infinity pool visible from where she stood.

The house had been empty for months according to her aunt, owned by someone who rarely visited.

“At least I’ll have peace and quiet,” Harper said to Duchess, who had wound herself around Harper’s ankles, purring softly.

As if the universe had heard her and decided to play a joke, a sleek black Range Rover pulled into the neighboring driveway. Harper watched curiously as a tall man stepped out, dressed in dark jeans and a simple gray t-shirt that did nothing to hide his athletic build.

He ran a hand through his dark hair, looking up at the house with what appeared to be exhaustion.,

“So much for peace and quiet,” Harper murmured, feeling strangely disappointed that her solitude would be compromised.

The next morning, Harper woke early, her teacher’s schedule making it impossible to sleep in, even during summer break. After feeding Duchess, she decided to enjoy her coffee on the back porch.

The morning air was crisp and the garden was bathed in golden light. This was exactly what she needed after the chaotic end of the school year.

“Good morning,” a deep voice called from over the fence, startling Harper so badly she nearly spilled her coffee.

The neighbor stood in his yard, holding his own mug. Up close, Harper could see that he was roughly her age, maybe early 30s, with striking blue eyes that crinkled at the corners when he smiled.

“Good morning,” Harper replied, attempting to smooth down her unruly red curls, suddenly conscious of her appearance in pajama shorts and an oversized t-shirt.

“I’m Harper, house-sitting for my Aunt Maggie.”,

“Tyler Andrews,” he replied with a warm smile.

“I don’t usually get to meet the neighbors.”

“I’m not here often enough. My aunt mentioned the house has been empty for a while,” Harper said, then immediately worried it sounded like she’d been discussing him.

Tyler laughed. “Yeah, I’ve been meaning to spend more time here, but work keeps me tied up in the city. I finally managed to clear my schedule for a few weeks.”

Harper nodded, not quite sure what else to say. There was something magnetic about him that made her nervous in a way she hadn’t felt in years.

“Well, I should get back to work,” Tyler said after a moment of silence.

“Even on vacation, the emails don’t stop. Maybe I’ll see you around, Harper.”

“Yeah, maybe,” she replied, watching as he retreated into his house.

Only after he disappeared did she realize she’d been holding her breath. Over the next few days, Harper settled into a comfortable routine.

Mornings were spent reading on the porch or sketching in the garden. Afternoons often involved exploring the neighborhood or working on lesson plans for the upcoming school year.,

She occasionally caught glimpses of Tyler leaving for a run in the morning, working on his laptop by the pool, or bringing in groceries.

On the fourth day of her stay, Harper was in the front yard, struggling to untangle Aunt Maggie’s garden hose, when she heard Tyler’s voice.

“Need some help with that?”

Harper looked up to find him leaning against the fence that separated their properties. He wore a casual button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing tanned forearms.

“Is it that obvious?” Harper laughed, gesturing to the knotted mess of hose.

Tyler opened the gate between their yards and walked over. “I’m pretty good at untangling things. Part of my job description.”

“Oh, what do you do?” Harper asked, stepping back to give him room to work on the hose.

Tyler hesitated briefly before answering. “I run a company. Nothing too exciting.”

“That’s vague,” Harper teased, finding her nervousness around him fading.

“What about you?” Tyler asked, his fingers working deftly at the knots.

“What do you do when you’re not saving people’s plants from dehydration?”

“I teach art to third graders,” Harper replied.

“Which is both as chaotic and rewarding as it sounds.”

Tyler looked up at her with genuine interest. “That actually sounds amazing. Creating something from nothing, helping kids express themselves.”

The sincerity in his voice caught Harper off guard. Most people responded with polite nods or jokes about finger painting when she told them about her job.

“It is amazing,” she agreed. “Though sometimes I wish I had more time for my own art.”

“What kind of art do you create?” Tyler asked, successfully untangling the last knot and handing her the freed hose.

“Watercolors, mostly landscapes and botanical illustrations.”

“I’d love to see them sometime,” Tyler said, and the way he looked at her made Harper’s cheeks flush.

“Maybe,” she replied non-committally.

“Thanks for your help with the hose.”

“Anytime, neighbor.” Tyler smiled before heading back to his house.,
