You’re Always A Disgrace, My Parents Said At My Birthday Party. So When I Bought My Dream Condo, I..
The Disgrace and the Dream
“You’re always a disgrace,” my mother said it casually like she was commenting on the weather. It was my 32nd birthday. Everyone else at the table laughed awkwardly, pretending it was a joke. My dad raised his glass like nothing unusual had happened.
Hi everyone, my name is Lillian. I remember staring at the candle on my cake, watching the wax bend under the heat. I thought about how strange it was that humiliation had become a normal part of family gatherings.
“She can’t keep a relationship,” my dad added with a chuckle. “Can’t hold a proper job either.”
More laughter followed. I didn’t defend myself. I didn’t argue. I just blew out the candles.
A week later, I moved into a small apartment without telling them. A year after that, I launched my design firm. Two years later, the company expanded faster than I expected.
Three years after that birthday dinner, I signed the closing papers on a condo overlooking the city. It was my dream place with floor-to-ceiling windows and white oak floors. Quiet mornings were filled with sunlight.
