The Illusion of Perfection

My wife slept with a coworker 17 years ago. Now my daughter mocked me, “He’s not even my real dad.”

That day I made a decision that changed everything. Hello Reddit I plus here.

I’m 46 now. This happened just a few months ago, but the real story started 17 years ago.

Back then I thought I had the perfect life. I was 29, newly married to Leah.

We met at a small publishing company in Chicago. Me in marketing, her in HR.

She was funny, sharp, and had this magnetic energy that made everything feel exciting. I fell hard.

Within a year we were married. A few months later she told me she was pregnant.

I was ecstatic. I remember dancing in the living room like an idiot, lifting her off her feet.

I was promising I’d be the best father in the world. We named our daughter Kayla.

She was my pride and joy. Every birthday, every school play, every scraped knee, I was there.

I loved being her dad more than anything in the world. But what I didn’t know was that Leah had an affair.

What I couldn’t have known was that during that same year, she had a brief affair with a coworker.

He was someone from the finance department. His name was Darren.

She told no one. She buried it, buried him, and we moved on like nothing had ever happened.

Or so I thought. Over the years our marriage hit the usual rough patches.

We argued about money, about her always working late, and about my job stress.

We even did a short trial separation when Kayla was 10. But we made it through.

Or maybe I just forced us through it. I was always trying to keep things together.
