My Arranged Alpha Husband Knelt For A Starving Orphan — And It Changed Everything

Part 1

I perfected the art of standing like a statue while imagining the Alpha’s stone fortress crumbling to dust around me.

Snow gathered on the black paving stones of the courtyard as the northern nobles assembled to witness his triumphant return.

Drums echoed in the distance with a rhythmic thunder that rattled my ribs.

He was coming home.

Craig was the man who had crushed my pack’s resistance in a matter of days.

He was also the man I was being forced to marry.

A noblewoman shifted beside me and leaned too close.

She whispered that he had decimated the last southern rebellion without breaking a sweat.

I kept my gaze fixed straight ahead.

I told her efficiency was simply the hallmark of a tyrant.

The woman shrank back into the crowd.

I was a daughter of the proud southern lineage.

No treaty could force me to forget what his armies had taken from us.

The engagement terms were utterly unyielding.

I would become his mate and the living symbol of my people’s submission.

I had met him exactly once during the formal signing ceremony.

He had stood at the far end of the throne room radiating an overwhelming dominance that filled every corner of the space.

I had stared back with all the defiance I could muster.

His assessing look had felt like a blade tracing my throat.

A sharp trumpet blast snapped me back to the present.

The massive iron gates groaned open.

I tightened my grip on my cloak and braced myself for the monster.

A massive black wolf padded into the courtyard.

The entire crowd stopped breathing.

His shoulders came up to a grown man’s chest.

Muscles rippled beneath fur so dark it seemed to absorb the weak winter sunlight.

But the terrifying predator was not alone.

A tiny child sat perched on his broad back.

She was wrapped in a crude wool cloak that practically swallowed her frail frame.

Her face was pinched with hunger and cold.

I blinked against the falling snow.

I was certain I was hallucinating from the freezing temperature.

A guard rushed forward with a heavy fur mantle.

The little girl scrambled down.

The wolf ducked behind a carved wooden screen near the gates.

Moments later Craig emerged.

He was taller than I remembered.

His dark hair clung to his forehead with melted snow.

And yet, his intense green eyes swept over the assembled court like a general cataloging threats.

He strode straight back to the shivering child.

He reached down with scarred hands that had broken my pack’s defenses.

He lifted the girl into his arms with agonizing care.

She rested her head against his armored chest like it was the safest place in the world.

As a result, she pointed a thin finger at the imposing keep.

She told him his home was very pretty.

I pressed my lips together to hide my shock.

Pretty was the absolute last word anyone would use to describe this brutal stronghold.

Craig ignored the murmuring court and carried her toward the dais.

His gaze finally locked onto mine.

I inclined my head with glacial politeness.

A muscle ticked along his jaw.

He turned away and gently set the child down near the hearth.

A courtier whispered loud enough for the echoes to carry.

They demanded to know who this filthy street urchin was.

Craig slowly turned his head.

He announced that she was under his personal protection.

The girl beamed at the sneering nobles.

She loudly declared that the Alpha was a hero who had promised to help all the hungry children and hurt soldiers.

Silence crashed over the courtyard like a physical blow.

Craig exhaled a slow breath.

He ordered the guest halls prepared immediately.

He commanded that anyone seeking refuge would be granted entry.

The Queen Mother stepped forward with venom in her eyes.

She reminded him that this was never the plan.

Craig cut her off and stated that it was the plan now.

I spent the next three days trying to decipher the enigma that was my future husband.

I found my answer in the lower training yard.

A sharp crack echoed off the stone walls.

I hurried toward the sound.

A young stable boy was tied to a wooden post.

A guard raised a heavy leather whip.

Before I could shout a command, a tiny figure sprinted across the frozen dirt.

Brenda threw herself between the guard and the bleeding boy.

She spread her small arms wide.

She screamed that the Alpha would not stand for this cruelty.

The guards laughed and told her she didn’t know the Alpha at all.

I stepped forward to intervene.

Heavy footsteps thundered behind me.

Craig stalked into the yard like a gathering storm.

The guards immediately dropped to their knees.

Craig stared at the whip on the ground.

He asked in a voice like grinding stones who had authorized the punishment.

Brenda marched right up to his towering form.

She grabbed his massive hand with her tiny fingers.

She told him he needed to explain to his men that hurting people was wrong.

She looked up at him with absolute unwavering trust.

Craig stared down at the small hand enveloping two of his calloused fingers.

He swept his gaze over the trembling guards.

He decreed that no one in his fortress would ever be whipped again.

Brenda rewarded him with a blinding smile.

She threw her arms around his waist and buried her face in his coat.

Craig froze completely.

He stood as rigid as a statue carved from ice.

Slowly, agonizingly, his large hand descended to rest gently on top of her head.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

I watched the most terrifying monster in our world drop to his knees for a child, and I realized I didn’t know the man I was marrying at all.
