My Brother Dragged Me From My Wheelchair To Save His Photos — Until The Police Walked In
Part 1
I never thought I would end up bleeding on the polished stone floor of a luxury rooftop venue while my family posed for photos.
I only went to my brother Brian and his fiancee Heather to celebrate their engagement because a foolish part of me still wanted to believe we were a real family.
I am paralyzed from the waist down and rely on a custom black wheelchair to move through a world that constantly asks me to apologize for existing.
I wore a soft cream blouse and spent an hour fixing my hair just so I could survive one evening in a room full of people who looked at my wheels before they looked at my face.
The venue was spectacular with glass walls and white orchids hanging from gold frames.
My parents Craig and Brenda stood near the bar looking proud and stiff in their expensive clothes.
Brenda chaired charity committees for disability awareness but her smile immediately tightened when her own daughter rolled into the room.
Brian was hoping to secure a massive promotion from the executives attending his party.
He kissed the air next to my cheek and whispered a warning for me not to ruin his perfect evening.
I moved to the edge of the room and parked near a pillar so I would not block anyone.
Craig walked over and loudly demanded to know why I always found a way to remind people I was broken.
Brenda told me to move farther toward the restrooms because the photographer needed background shots without my wheelchair ruining the aesthetic.
I swallowed the humiliation because my family had spent the last two years training me to protect Brian at all costs.
Then the event coordinator loudly clapped her hands and announced it was time for the family portraits.
Brian turned across the room and his eyes instantly locked onto me.
He pointed toward a low acrylic platform holding narrow decorative chairs.
I knew immediately that those chairs were completely unsafe for someone with a severe spinal injury.
I lack the core muscles to balance on slick surfaces without proper support.
I rolled up to the edge of the platform and quietly explained that I needed to stay in my wheelchair.
Brian let out a cruel laugh and told the crowd I was just making excuses.
He leaned down and hissed at me to quit faking my condition for sympathy.
I gripped my wheels and told him firmly that I was not moving.
His jaw clenched as he stepped closer and blocked my view of the crowd.
I heard a sharp click as his hand dropped and locked the brake on my right wheel.
Then I heard a second click as he locked the left wheel.
I dug my fingers into the armrests and begged him not to touch me.
He ignored my warning and grabbed my upper arms with a terrifying amount of force.
He violently yanked me forward and my useless legs twisted underneath my body.
For one awful second I hung suspended in the air before he let me drop.
My shoulder slammed onto the hard edge of the acrylic platform.
My head bounced against the floor and white light exploded behind my eyes.
A server dropped a tray of champagne flutes and the glass shattered everywhere.
My right hand landed directly on the broken shards and pain seared through my palm.
The music stopped and the entire room fell dead silent.
Brenda gasped but she did not call out my name.
Craig stood perfectly still and refused to look at me.
Heather covered her mouth with trembling hands.
Brian looked down at my bleeding body and furiously blamed me for ruining his photos.
A woman in a elegant navy dress pushed through the crowd and dropped to her knees beside me.
Her name was Reed and she ordered everyone to stay entirely back.
She carefully placed her hands near my head to stabilize my neck.
Brian nervously laughed and told the guests that I always did things like this for attention.
Reed looked up with eyes like ice and announced she was a medical physician.
She loudly stated she had watched him deliberately lock my wheels before pulling me.
A terrified murmur rippled through the wealthy guests as the illusion finally shattered.
A coworker named Tyler stepped out of the shadows with his phone raised high.
Tyler announced his camera had recorded the entire assault.
Brian turned the color of ash and lunged toward Tyler.
Then the heavy glass doors of the venue suddenly swung open.
Five police officers marched into the room and the engagement party froze.
The lead officer stared at the blood pooling on the floor and asked who called nine one one.
Brian raised his hands and immediately tried to tell the police I slipped.
But before he could finish his lie someone else spoke up.
