My Billionaire Client Had A Secret Portrait Of My Mom—Then The Men In Suits Arrived

Part 1

The massive, gold-framed portrait in the center of the billionaire’s private wing was a mistake.

I was never supposed to see it.

I definitely wasn’t supposed to recognize the woman staring back at me.

My job for the night was just to fix a faulty, sparking lighting panel in the West Wing.

But the moment I stepped into that silent, cavernous marble hallway, my heart stopped.

The portrait hung right at the center of the expansive wall, illuminated perfectly by a spotlight.

The elegant woman painted in the frame, draped in a stunning gown, was undeniably my mother.

She had the exact same hazel eyes, the same warm, slightly crooked smile, and the same tiny, faint scar above her right brow.

I stared up at the massive canvas, my heavy tool bag slipping from my numb fingers and crashing onto the marble floor.

My mother was a simple preschool teacher who spent her weekends clipping grocery coupons.

She had never stepped foot in a world of extreme wealth like this.

“Megan?” a deep, trembling voice suddenly called out from the shadows behind me.

I spun around rapidly to find Craig, the infamous billionaire owner of the estate, staring at me.

His tailored charcoal suit looked three sizes too big, as if the powerful man inside it had shrunk.

“Why the hell is my mom hanging in your house?” I demanded.

My voice echoed loudly off the polished marble floors.

He swallowed hard.

His dark eyes flicked nervously up to the painting as if it physically caused him pain.

“I strictly warned my staff to keep this entire wing locked at all times,” he muttered, pacing slowly backward.

I stepped closer to him, my heavy work boots thudding against the floor.

“Well, your security system is trash.

You need to tell me right now why she’s hanging on your wall like some forgotten queen.”

He rubbed a trembling hand forcefully over his face, suddenly looking decades older.

“I had absolutely no idea she had a daughter,” he whispered.

He stared at me as if searching my face for clues.

The air in the hallway suddenly felt entirely too thick to breathe.

“What did you just say to me?”

He looked at me with an intense, broken sincerity that made my stomach drop into my shoes.

“I knew your mother twenty-six years ago, long before you were even born.

She was the only woman I ever truly loved.”

I suddenly remembered the heavily tinted black SUV that had been parked outside my crappy apartment building every single night for the past week.

“Brenda,” an elegant, chilling voice echoed down the corridor.

We both snapped our heads simultaneously toward the deep shadows at the far end of the corridor.

An incredibly elegant older woman in a deep emerald silk dress stepped smoothly into the light.

Her eyes were razor-sharp and terrifyingly familiar.

“I heard a rumor that a certain hidden portrait was unfortunately discovered tonight,” she purred.

Craig stepped between us instantly, completely blocking her path.

His fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned stark white.

“Leave her alone, Brenda, or I swear to God…”

She ignored his threat entirely, her icy, calculating gaze pinning me firmly in place.

“Your mother didn’t just disappear into thin air because of us, sweetheart.

She ran like a coward because she stole something incredibly valuable.”

I absolutely didn’t wait to hear the rest of her poisonous lie.

I bolted out of the mansion, sprinting to the driveway.

My hands shook, rattling the key against the ignition.

I gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white, swerving wildly across the empty lanes as I sped home.

I finally burst through the front door of my apartment and found my mom sitting quietly on the couch.

“Mom, I just saw your portrait,” I blurted out.

“I met Craig.

And Brenda.”

The color drained from her face, leaving her pale.

“No,” she breathed, her hands trembling.

“No, Megan, please tell me you didn’t talk to her.”

“They told me you vanished decades ago.

She told me you stole something.”

She scrambled to her feet, seizing my arm with a terrifying grip.

“We have to go.

Right now.

Grab your coat and don’t ask any questions.”

Before I could even open my mouth to ask why, three slow, heavy knocks pounded on our front door.

My mother froze, her eyes widening with primal terror.

“They found us,” she whispered, her voice cracking.

A man’s voice called forcefully through the heavy wood, his tone calm and sickeningly rehearsed.

“Megan, your presence has been officially requested downstairs.”

My mom yanked me toward the small kitchen.

“Out the back.

Now.”

But as we reached it, the handle on the back door was already turning from the outside.

We were trapped.

“The bathroom window,” she ordered, shoving me down the narrow hallway.

The front door lock cracked with a deafening, metallic snap.

Heavy footsteps thundered into our living room.

I climbed onto the bathroom counter, shoving my shoulders through the narrow window frame.

“Go!” she screamed, shoving my legs out toward the dark alley below.

I slid halfway outside, the freezing cold night air hitting my sweating face.

My fingers slipped on the frame as a heavy hand clamped around my ankle, and a cold voice from the hallway barked, “Take the girl.”
