My Son Maxed Out My Card at Disney While I Was in Emergency Surgery — So I Canceled It Mid-Trip

Part 1

I woke up from emergency surgery to find my credit card had been maxed out at Disney World.

While I was fighting for my life, my son was buying Mickey Mouse ears for his ungrateful children.

My name is Brenda and I am seventy-two years old.

I have always been the kind of mother who put her children first.

After my husband passed away fifteen years ago, I poured everything into raising my son Tyler.

I worked two jobs to put him through college and even gave him the down payment for his first house.

When his twins were born, I was there every single day to babysit and help however I could.

Tyler married a woman named Megan.

From day one I could tell she saw me as a convenient ATM rather than family.

I kept my mouth shut because I loved my son and wanted to be part of my grandchildren’s lives.

Sam and Lily were eight years old.

Megan was raising them to expect everything handed to them on a silver platter.

I lived comfortably on my late husband’s pension and social security.

I had been careful my whole life to plan for medical emergencies and leave something behind for Tyler.

Everything changed on a Tuesday morning in March.

I had been having stomach pains for weeks.

That morning the pain became unbearable and I could barely stand up.

I called Tyler while gasping through the pain and told him I needed help.

He told me he was at work and suggested I call an ambulance.

I did call an ambulance and they rushed me in for tests at the emergency room.

My appendix was inflamed and on the verge of rupturing.

The doctor told me I needed emergency surgery immediately or I could die from sepsis.

I was terrified because I had never had surgery before.

I gave them Tyler’s number as my emergency contact.

He showed up at the hospital an hour later with Megan by his side.

She looked annoyed like I had inconvenienced her by nearly dying.

She only asked the doctor how long the surgery would take.

She did not ask how I was doing or what the risks were.

Tyler squeezed my hand and promised they would be there when I woke up.

I held onto those words as they wheeled me toward the operating room.

The surgery went well but nothing about what came after would be well ever again.

I woke up in recovery around six in the evening.

My abdomen felt like it had been set on fire.

I asked the nurse if my son was in the waiting room.

She checked and came back shaking her head to tell me no one was there.

My heart sank into my stomach.

Tyler promised he would be there when I woke up.

I tried calling his cell phone but it went straight to voicemail.

I tried Megan’s number and got the exact same result.

I spent that first night alone in a hospital room drifting in and out of consciousness.

The next morning a different nurse asked if any family was coming to visit today.

I told her I was sure they would be coming soon.

I tried calling again and sent text messages with no response.

By the afternoon I was starting to panic that something terrible had happened to them.

On the third day I was discharged without hearing a single word from Tyler.

I took a cab home which cost me forty-two dollars I could not really afford.

Every bump in the road sent pain shooting through my abdomen.

My house felt empty and cold when I finally walked through the front door.

I tried calling Tyler one more time before deciding to check my bank account online.

Maybe I was just being paranoid.

I logged into my account and stared at the screen in utter disbelief.

My checking account which had over six thousand dollars four days ago was down to three hundred.

My credit card which I kept for emergencies was maxed out at its fifteen thousand dollar limit.

My hands started shaking as I clicked on the transaction details.

Every single charge was from Disney World in Orlando.

They had booked hotel rooms at the Grand Floridian and bought expensive park tickets.

They charged character dining experiences and VIP tours at three hundred dollars per person.

While I was lying alone in that hospital room wondering if I would die, they were riding Space Mountain with my money.

Something inside me just snapped.

I remembered I had given Tyler my credit card information months ago to order something online for Lily’s birthday.

I trusted him to delete the information after he used it.

He saved it instead.

The moment I was vulnerable he used it to take his family on a lavish vacation.

I immediately called the credit card company to report the fraudulent charges.

The representative told me it was complicated because I had previously authorized him to use the card.

I demanded they freeze the card immediately to prevent any more charges.

They deactivated the card on the spot.

Then I remembered they had used my debit card too.

I called the bank and closed my checking account entirely.

Within twenty minutes my old account was closed and a new one was opened.

I wanted them cut off completely from every single dime I owned.

Based on the hotel charges they had booked their stay through Sunday.

They had four more days of their magical vacation left.

I sat back in my chair with my surgical incision throbbing and smiled.

They had absolutely no idea what was coming.

My phone finally rang at seven that evening with Tyler’s name on the screen.

I answered the phone and listened to his bright and cheerful voice.

He told me they decided last minute to take the kids to Disney.

He asked how the surgery went like it was a routine dental cleaning.

I told him I nearly died and spent two nights alone in the hospital.

He told me not to be dramatic and said they didn’t want the kids to see me sick.

He bragged about Sam meeting Spider-Man and Lily having breakfast with princesses.

He promised to bring me some Mickey Mouse souvenirs when they got back on Sunday.

He hung up before I could even respond to his absolute delusion.

He had no idea the cards were no longer working.

They had not tried to charge anything new since I called the bank.

They were probably relaxing after a long day of rides completely oblivious to reality.

Friday morning would be very interesting.

That is when they would try to check out of their breakfast reservation with a deactivated card.
