I Stumbled Into A High-Society Party — Then The Wealthy Host Claimed I Was His Secret Wife

Part 1
The ballroom fell entirely silent as a hundred pairs of eyes turned toward me.
I stood there clutching my worn carpet bag.
My dress was dusty from two weeks of travel.
The room was dripping with crystal chandeliers.
Someone in the crowd laughed.
The whispers started spreading like a wildfire.
I heard someone mutter about my absolute nerve.
My throat tightened until I could barely swallow.
I was only here for the seamstress position I had been promised.
The stagecoach had dropped me at the edge of town three hours past sunset.
That was my first terrible mistake of the evening.
My second mistake was trusting the map Diane had sent with my employment letter.
I checked the address on my crumpled letter one more time just to be sure.
This was definitely the Montgomery Estate.
Climbing the front steps, my bag remained clutched tightly in both freezing hands.
A firm knock on the thick wood echoed into the night.
Nobody answered the door.
Having traveled all this way, my pockets held exactly seventeen cents to my name.
Diane had been entirely clear in her letter of employment.
The instructions explicitly stated to arrive on the twentieth and get settled before starting work tomorrow.
Pressing my hand against the heavy door, the wood unexpectedly gave way.
It swung open heavily as my weight leaned against it.
The entrance hall completely stole my breath away.
The floors were pristine, gleaming marble.
Beyond the staircase were open double doors leading into the ballroom.
That was when I finally saw them all.
There were at least a hundred wealthy people crowded inside.
Women wore gowns that probably required three maids to get into.
This was definitely not the staff entrance.
This was a major social event.
I stumbled backward trying to escape.
My worn heel caught on the edge of the doorframe.
I lurched forward instead of backward.
My carpet bag swung out heavily and hit the wall.
Suddenly I was standing completely exposed in the entrance to the ballroom.
The music stopped first.
By the time I regained my balance, every single person was staring at me.
My cheeks burned with intense humiliation.
I tried to apologize and explain that I did not mean to intrude.
A sharp voice cut through the silence.
A woman stepped forward from the parted crowd.
Her dress could have fed my entire neighborhood for a year.
“I honestly didn’t think you’d have the audacity to show your face here,” she announced with an icy glare.
“I’m just here for the seamstress position,” I stammered defensively.
Cruel laughter erupted from the velvet-clad crowd pressing in around us.
A younger woman in an expensive ice-blue dress stepped forward to join her.
Her cold eyes raked over my dusty travel coat.
“Is that what they’re calling it now, Brenda?” she laughed maliciously.
My stomach plummeted at the sound of the family name.
I fumbled in my bag and pulled out my worn envelope.
I explained it was from Diane offering me employment managing the household staff.
Brenda’s lip curled in pure disgust.
She stated that her housekeeper would never invite someone like me through the front door during her son’s engagement celebration.
I looked around the room and suddenly saw the white roses everywhere.
I whispered an apology and said I did not know.
The woman in blue stepped closer until her expensive jasmine perfume overwhelmed me.
She asked if I honestly thought I could walk in here and Tyler would choose me over her.
I explained I did not know anyone named Tyler and I only came for a job.
Heather’s smile turned incredibly vicious.
She loudly announced I was a desperate woman trying to worm my way into a wealthy rancher’s life.
She called me a pathetic fortune hunter in front of everyone.
Brenda ordered me to get out before she had me physically removed.
I nodded because I could not find my breath to speak.
I just needed to leave this nightmare immediately.
A deep voice suddenly asked from the back of the room if there was a problem.
The crowd shifted to create a clear path.
A man walked through and I understood immediately why the room had gone quiet.
His face was all hard angles and sharp jawlines.
He wore his formal suit like uncomfortable armor.
There was something dangerous about him.
Heather glided quickly to his side and curled possessive fingers around his arm.
She claimed they were just handling an unfortunate situation.
Tyler asked her what kind of situation she meant in a rough, direct voice.
Brenda stepped forward and claimed I was pretending to be a seamstress.
My heart sank as I realized he was going to condemn me too.
Brenda smiled and said she would have the butler escort me out.
Tyler pulled his arm free from Heather’s grip.
He stated very calmly that I was here because he sent for me.
The room went completely, terrifyingly silent.
Heather’s fingers dug into her own palms.
Brenda’s face went completely pale as she asked why he would ever do that.
He stopped a few feet from me, his cold eyes sweeping over my worn dress, and announced to the silent room: ‘Because she’s my wife.’
