My Twin Sister Showed Up Beaten, So I Took Her Place To Trap Her Husband

Part 1

I will never forget the sound of that knock.

Three sharp wraps on my apartment door at exactly midnight on a Tuesday.

Not the casual knock of a neighbor.

This was desperate and urgent.

My heart stopped before my brain even caught up.

I opened the door and my breath hitched in my throat.

Heather stood in my hallway.

She was swaying on her feet like she might collapse at any second.

Her left eye was swollen completely shut.

The skin around it was a deep purple that was already turning into an ugly black.

Her bottom lip was split and crusted with dried blood.

But the worst part was her neck.

Dark fingerprint-shaped marks wrapped around her throat like a horrible necklace.

They showed exactly where someone’s hands had been squeezing the life out of her.

She whispered my name and her voice was so broken.

Then her knees gave out and she fell forward.

I caught her before she hit the ground and pulled her inside.

My hands were shaking as I guided her to my couch.

She was trembling all over and making tiny gasping sounds.

I already knew who did this.

I had known for months that something was wrong.

But Heather had been so good at hiding it.

She just cried deep and horrible sobs that shook her entire body.

Let me back up and explain how we got to this nightmare.

Heather and I are identical twins.

We were born seven minutes apart and I never let her forget that I am the older sister.

Growing up, even our Aunt Brenda mixed us up.

But we were completely different where it actually counted.

I was always the loud one who fought back.

I became a kickboxing instructor because I loved feeling strong.

Heather was softer and always saw the good in absolutely everyone.

She became a kindergarten teacher because she wanted to heal the world.

Four years ago, she met Craig Sullivan at a charity event.

He was successful, wealthy, and had perfect manners.

I met him on their third date and knew immediately something was off.

There was something possessive in his eyes when he looked at her.

He looked at her like she was a thing he had acquired rather than a person.

I told Heather my concerns and it was a massive mistake.

She got defensive and we fought for the first time in our lives.

They got married ten months later in an expensive wedding that felt entirely wrong to me.

After the wedding, I saw less and less of my sister.

Craig convinced her to quit her teaching job and move to his house in the suburbs.

There were always excuses for why she could not see me.

Craig had work events or they were renovating the house.

But I could feel something was terribly wrong.

The warning signs were small at first.

Heather started wearing long sleeves in the middle of July.

She would cancel our plans at the last minute with weak excuses.

She started flinching if someone moved too quickly near her.

She started saying ‘Craig thinks’ instead of having her own opinions.

Six months ago, I showed up at her house unannounced.

Craig blocked the doorway with his body and told me to call first next time.

I never got past that doorway.

Now she was on my couch crying so hard she could barely breathe.

I wrapped ice in a kitchen towel and held it gently against her swollen eye.

I asked her to tell me everything.

It took almost an hour for the words to come out in broken pieces.

It started with small things like Craig criticizing her clothes and her friends.

Then came the yelling and the tracking of her phone.

He made rules about where she could go and who she could see.

Then the pushing and grabbing started.

He always made sure to hit her where people could not see the marks.

Tonight had been the absolute worst.

He came home late, grabbed her, and squeezed her throat until she saw darkness.

He threw her against the wall and told her he would make her body disappear if she tried to leave.

He had connections and money, so who would ever believe her?

I held my sister while she cried and promised he would pay for this.

She finally fell asleep around three in the morning.

I sat in my dark kitchen and stared at nothing.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw those fingerprints on her throat.

My sister would be dead right now if he had squeezed just a little harder.

The rage in my chest felt like a living thing demanding immediate action.

Calling the police without evidence would just result in his expensive lawyers making it disappear.

He would only become angrier and more dangerous.

I caught my reflection in the microwave door.

I saw my face, which was exactly the same as Heather’s face.

The idea hit me like a bolt of lightning.

We were identical twins with the exact same height and build.

What if we switched places?

What if I went back to that house as Heather and confronted Craig myself?

I knew how to fight and defend myself.

More importantly, I was not afraid of him.

I would show him what happens when he picks on someone who can fight back.

I told Heather my plan when she woke up.

She was terrified and said he was too smart to fall for it.

I told her I would get real proof that would put him away for good.

She spent the next two days teaching me how to survive in his house.

I learned how he liked his coffee and what time dinner had to be ready.

I practiced making myself smaller and keeping my eyes cast downward.

She cut my hair to match her bob and gave me her wedding ring.

I drove her to Aunt Brenda’s house to keep her safe.

Then I got out of my car and walked up to the front door of my sister’s prison.
