My Daughter Tried To Steal My House — My Hidden Cameras Put Her In Handcuffs

Part 1

I always thought the worst kind of betrayal would come from a stranger.

I never imagined it would come holding a bouquet of yellow tulips and wearing my daughter’s smile.

I spent my entire life taking care of Megan.

I gave up my dream of becoming the school principal just so I could be home in the afternoons to help her study.

I sold her father’s antique watch to pay for her college tuition after he passed away.

I even liquidated a small investment account when her husband Tyler needed cash for a failed startup company.

They live two towns over now and barely visit more than once every couple of months.

When they do, it is always a whirlwind of air kisses and rushed apologies.

Megan always complains about my old Victorian house.

She looks around with distaste and points out every creaking floorboard or overgrown weed in the garden.

Last week, they showed up on a Wednesday morning completely unannounced.

Tyler brought a pastry box of blueberry scones.

Megan arranged the tulips in a chipped vase on the kitchen table.

Something felt immediately wrong.

Her makeup was flawless, but her eyes kept darting around the room.

Tyler barely looked at me.

He was busy examining the grandfather clock and the family photos on the mantle like he was taking inventory.

Megan leaned across the table.

She told me the house was getting too dangerous for an old woman living alone.

I took a slow sip of my tea.

I reminded her that I was perfectly fine and had managed for over a decade since her father passed away.

Her jaw tightened.

She pulled a napkin to her face and squeezed out a single tear.

She said she was just worried because I was forgetting things and falling behind on repairs.

I had never mentioned any repairs to her.

When they finally got up to leave, Megan reached into her purse for her keys.

An envelope slipped out and fluttered to the floor near my feet.

She snatched it up quickly with a nervous laugh.

But my eyes are still sharp.

I saw the words ‘Power of Attorney’ printed in bold letters at the top.

Beneath it was a photocopy of my signature.

I had never signed a document like that in my entire life.

My knees nearly buckled after their car pulled out of the driveway.

I did not panic.

I drove straight to my bank and asked Craig, the assistant manager, to check on my safe deposit box.

Craig looked uncomfortable.

He tapped his keyboard and refused to meet my eyes.

He told me someone had tried to request a duplicate key last week claiming to be my legal guardian.

They had my full name, my account details, and my late husband’s file.

I felt the cold air of the vault settle into my bones.

I left the bank and drove straight to an electronics store.

I bought three wireless cameras disguised as wall hooks.

I installed one in the study, one in the hallway, and one near the back door.

I wanted to believe I was just being paranoid.

I wanted to believe my own child would never try to rip my life away from me.

Two nights later, my phone vibrated on the nightstand at two in the morning.

The screen lit up with a motion detection alert for the back door.

I sat up in the dark.

I opened the live feed on my laptop.

Megan and Tyler slipped quietly into my kitchen.

Megan had used the spare key hidden inside the ceramic goose by the rose bushes.

Tyler was wearing black gloves.

They walked straight into my study.

Megan opened the bottom drawer of my desk and started digging through my personal files.

Tyler pulled out a folded piece of paper.

It was an old, non-binding will I had handwritten years ago leaving everything to Megan.

Tyler read it and smirked.

Megan grabbed his arm and kissed his cheek.

The next morning, I called an old student of mine named Heather who was now a ruthless estate lawyer.

Heather came over and helped me draft a brand new will.

I left the house to a scholarship fund in my husband’s name.

I left a small trust for the local animal shelter.

I left exactly zero cents to Megan.

I thought securing my assets would be enough to make them back off.

I was wrong.

A thick envelope arrived in the mail three days later from a law firm I had never heard of.

Megan was officially petitioning the court to declare me legally unfit to manage my own finances.

She submitted dated journal entries and twisted voicemails claiming I was suffering from cognitive decline.

She wanted full control over my house, my bank accounts, and my medical decisions.

She was trying to steal my freedom.

I immediately booked an appointment with a state-certified clinical neuropsychologist.

I spent four hours doing flashcards, math problems, and logic puzzles.

The doctor handed me the results and told me I was sharper than most people half my age.

I handed those results straight to Heather.

But Megan was already setting up a meeting with a shady lawyer to finalize her fraudulent power of attorney.

She called me on the phone with a sickeningly sweet voice to invite me.

I agreed to go.

I watched my own daughter smile in the dark as she planned to steal my entire life, and that was the exact moment I stopped being her mother and started being her worst nightmare.
