My Grandson's Stepmom Framed Him For Assault — She Didn't Know I Was A Retired Detective

Part 1

The phone rang at 2:47 in the morning.

At that hour, it never brings good news.

I fumbled in the dark until the cold glare of the screen illuminated my face.

It was Tyler, my grandson.

His voice trembled through the speaker, broken by heavy sobs.

“grandma, I’m at the police station.”

My heart pounded against my ribs.

“She hit me with a candlestick.”

He drew a sharp breath.

“My eyebrow is bleeding, but she’s telling them I attacked her.”

I swung my legs over the edge of the bed.

The cold floor grounded me.

“My dad believes her.”

Tyler’s words ricocheted in my mind.

Megan, my son’s new wife, had spent the last five years turning Greg into a stranger.

Now, she was coming for my grandson.

“Don’t say another word,” I instructed, already reaching for my clothes.

“I’m on my way.”

I threw on black slacks and a thick gray sweater.

Before leaving the room, I opened my dresser drawer.

My expired police commander badge sat right where I left it eight years ago.

I slipped it into my pocket without a second thought.

The taxi ride to the precinct felt like an eternity.

I stared out the window, watching the empty city streets blur past.

My mind raced back to the day Greg brought Megan home.

He had been devastated by the sudden death of his first wife.

Megan appeared like a saving angel, attentive and flawless.

I saw the cold calculation in her eyes from day one.

She evaluated Greg not with love, but like a profitable investment.

She slowly poisoned his mind against me.

She whispered that I was controlling and judgmental.

Greg defended me at first, but constant drops of poison eventually taint the purest water.

He spaced out our visits until he stopped calling altogether.

Tyler was the only one who still sneaked away to see me.

The precinct was a familiar gray building bathed in harsh fluorescent light.

I walked through the double doors, my legs trembling with contained rage.

A young desk officer looked up from his paperwork.

“I’m here for Tyler,” I stated firmly.

He checked his notes with a bored expression.

“Ah, the domestic assault case.

Are you the grandmother?”

“Brenda,” I replied, placing my expired badge on the counter.

His eyes widened, and he immediately stood up.

“the commander, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know you were family.”

I demanded to see my grandson.

He led me down a hallway I knew like the back of my hand.

Tyler sat huddled in a plastic chair in the waiting area.

A clumsy bandage covered his bleeding eyebrow.

He jumped up and wrapped his arms around my waist.

I stroked his hair, feeling his entire body shake.

Greg stood against the far wall, his jaw clenched tight.

He wouldn’t meet my eyes.

Next to him sat Megan, legs crossed, wearing a perfectly rehearsed victim expression.

She had a fresh bruise on her arm.

Her big, teary eyes looked at me as if seeking sympathy.

I knew that look perfectly.

It was the calculated gaze of a seasoned manipulator.

“You didn’t have to come,” Greg muttered dryly.

Those words cut deep, but I ignored him.

captain Craig, an old subordinate of mine, emerged from an office.

He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me.

We sat in his small office with the door closed.

Tyler kept his gaze lowered, his hands trembling in his lap.

Craig explained that Megan claimed Tyler pushed her down the stairs and struck her arm.

He told me the house security cameras were conveniently broken that night.

I leaned back in the chair.

None of this was a coincidence.

I asked Tyler to tell me exactly what happened.

He swallowed hard and looked at his hands.

He explained that he came home from studying, and Megan was waiting in the dark.

She insulted him, grabbed his arm, and struck him with a heavy silver candlestick.

While he lay bleeding on the floor, he watched her smash her own arm against the wall.

She manufactured her own bruises before Greg came downstairs.

Greg didn’t even ask Tyler for his side of the story before calling the police.

Craig rubbed his face in frustration.

“Legally, my hands are tied, the commander.”

It was the word of a minor against two adults.

Greg had completely supported his wife’s fabricated story.

Craig released Tyler into my temporary custody.

We walked out into the cold early morning air.

Greg and Megan had already driven away.

The city streets were empty and silent.

Tyler looked up at me, his eyes filled with fear.

“What are we going to do, grandma?”

I looked at his bruised face and made a silent vow.

Megan had made a massive miscalculation tonight.

She thought she was dealing with a frail old woman, but she had just started a war with a retired criminal investigator.
