My Entitled Mother Tried To Move Into My New House While I Was Abroad — So I Trapped Her Outside

Part 1

The screen of my phone illuminated the dark hotel room in Paris.

Rachel’s face was pale on the video call.

“Heather, you need to look at the family group chat right now,” she whispered.

“They aren’t just talking this time,” Rachel said, her voice shaking.

“They are trying to take your house.”

A cold, heavy stone dropped into my stomach.

I switched over to the messaging app with numb fingers.

The family chat had over a hundred missed messages.

My mother, Brenda, had posted a detailed floor plan of my new property.

I had closed on the house just two months before this trip.

The next message in the chat was from Brenda.

“Ashley will take the sunny master bedroom.”

“Sarah gets the west-facing room with the garden view.”

“Jessica can have the one with the balcony.”

“Heather is going to be single forever anyway, so the sofa will be fine for her.”

Ashley’s reply followed immediately.

“Yay!”

“Which wallpaper should we pick?”

Sarah sent a photo of my living room, filled with half-packed boxes.

“We’ve already moved half the stuff in,” Sarah wrote.

They were actively moving into the home I had paid for with my own blood and sweat.

I kept scrolling, dreading the answer to the obvious question.

How did they get inside?

Brenda answered it in her next text.

“Oh, the key was easy.”

“I had a spare made when we stayed over for dinner before her trip.”

“She’s so trusting and easy to fool.”

The betrayal was a physical ache in my chest.

I had let my mother hold my keys while I carried groceries inside.

She had used that brief moment of trust to steal from me.

There was no time for grief.

I opened my contacts and dialed David, my real estate attorney.

I explained the situation and sent him the screenshots.

David inhaled sharply.

“This is a premeditated, malicious intrusion,” he said.

“We can take steps immediately if you authorize it.”

“Do it,” I said.

“I want my home secured tonight.”

David promised to dispatch a security team and a locksmith.

Buried near the bottom of the chat was a message from Brenda.

“I’ve booked the final moving truck for 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.”

“Everyone, do not be late.”

Thirty minutes later, the head of the security firm called me.

My explicit orders to him were simple.

Every physical lock on the property needed to be removed immediately.

High-end digital keypads would replace the old hardware on all the doors.

Exterior cameras were required to cover every possible angle of the property.

Paying the premium invoice was the easiest decision I had made all week.

Before dawn, the security company emailed me the new access codes.

I opened the camera feed on my phone.

My house sat in quiet darkness, completely fortified.

At exactly eight-forty-five, Brenda’s car pulled into my driveway.

Jessica was in the passenger seat.

A moment later, Ashley and Sarah arrived in a second vehicle.

They stepped out, laughing and pointing at the pristine landscaping.

I turned up the volume on my phone.

“Today, this becomes our home,” Brenda declared.

“I want to change the wallpaper by this weekend.”

Ashley cheered, clapping her hands.

Brenda reached into her designer handbag.

She pulled out the shiny brass spare key she had stolen from me.

She stepped up to the door and reached toward the lock.

Her hand stopped in mid-air.

She stared at the door panel.

The keyhole she expected was completely gone.

In its place was a sleek, black digital keypad.

“What is this?” she muttered.

Ashley and Sarah crowded behind her.

“Did the locks change?”

Ashley asked, her voice rising in panic.

A large moving truck parked directly in front of the house.

Two men in overalls stepped out.

The foreman walked up the driveway with a clipboard in his hand.

“Good morning,” he said.

“Shall we start bringing in the furniture?”

Brenda spun around, her face flushed red.

“Wait,” she stammered.

“The door won’t open.”

“The key won’t work.”

The foreman raised an eyebrow.

“Oh, you forgot the key?”

“No, I have it!”

Brenda shrieked.

“There’s some weird machine on the door!”

The movers exchanged tired glances, clearly recognizing a disaster.

It was time.

I tapped the microphone icon on my security app.

“You will not enter my house,” I said.

The four of them froze in place.

Brenda looked wildly at the sky.

“Who is it?” she yelled.

“It’s Heather,” I replied softly.

Ashley spotted the camera lens above the frame.

“Heather, what is the meaning of this prank?”

Ashley demanded.

“Open the door right now.”

“This isn’t a prank,” I said.

“You are standing on my property, and you have no right to enter.”

Brenda stepped closer to the camera, her face twisting into an ugly scowl.

“What are you saying, Heather?”

“We’re family!”

“Your house is our house too!”

I didn’t raise my voice.

“No, this house is my sole property.”

“You have no right to assign yourselves rooms here.”

“You are attempting to trespass.”

Jessica grabbed Brenda’s arm, looking terrified.

“But we told you in the family chat!”

Jessica whined.

“It’s your fault for not seeing it!”

The sheer entitlement of her logic was staggering.

“Going behind my back does not grant you ownership,” I said.

“Pack everything up and leave my property immediately, or I will call the police.”

A heavy silence fell over the driveway.

The movers stepped back toward their truck.

Ashley crossed her arms and stepped forward.

“Are you serious, Heather?”

Ashley spat.

“You want to throw us out?”

“We already canceled our old lease!”

“Where are we supposed to go?”

“That is not my problem,” I answered.

Brenda’s eyes narrowed into slits.

“We will never leave,” Brenda declared.

“Our stuff is already inside.”

“If you try to make us homeless, we’ll call the police on you!”

Just how far would my entitled family go to steal the home I built?
