My Uncle Traded Me To A Violent Man — What The Stranger Who Found Me Did Shattered Me

Part 1
The storm rolled across the plains like a dark, angry beast, shaking the wooden walls of the bunkhouse.
I stood near the doorway, trying to steady my ragged breathing.
Two days ago, I had run away from the only life I had ever known.
I ran from a house filled with constant shouting and suffocating fear.
My uncle had controlled every aspect of my existence since I was a little girl.
Last week, he finalized arrangements to marry me off to a man who terrified me.
The thought of being trapped in a house with Derek made my blood run cold.
I had absolutely nowhere else to go when I slipped out the back window.
The freezing rain soaked through my dress by the time I collapsed outside this stranger’s barn.
That was where Tom found me.
He was a quiet, steady man who worked this isolated land all by himself.
When he found me curled up in the mud, he did not demand explanations.
He simply brought me inside, handed me warm food, and pointed to a clean bed.
He knew I was hiding from something dangerous, but he waited for me to speak first.
Tonight, the wind was howling louder than before.
I stood in the doorway, watching him quietly remove his muddy boots.
I could not understand why he was being so endlessly patient with me.
No man in my entire life had ever treated me gently.
The men I knew took what they wanted without asking permission.
Tom glanced over his shoulder when he sensed my eyes on him.
He did not step toward me to assert his dominance.
“Storm’s getting worse,” he murmured.
He kept his distance, giving me a clear path to the door if I wanted to run.
“You all right?”
He asked the question softly.
I nodded, though my hands were trembling so badly I had to hide them.
I carried a deep fear inside me that had been planted during my miserable childhood.
But Tom was entirely different.
Still, the heavy expectation of my past convinced me I had to earn my keep.
“I don’t want to be alone tonight,” I said softly.
Tom went completely still, carefully processing my words.
He understood the nervous weight in my voice.
He shook his head gently and took one slow step closer.
“You don’t owe me anything,” he said firmly.
He stopped a full three feet away from me.
“Not one thing.”
“Do you hear me?”
I finally looked up at him.
“I know,” I whispered.
A massive crack of thunder rattled the windowpanes.
I flinched violently, shrinking back into the shadows.
Tom didn’t move a single muscle, offering me a safe anchor.
I took a hesitant step toward him.
“I want to trust someone,” I confessed, my voice breaking.
“Even if I don’t know how.”
His deeply lined face softened in the dim light.
He still did not reach for me.
“You don’t have to trust me tonight,” he told me.
“You don’t have to trust me ever.”
“I’m just trying to keep you safe until you figure out where you want to go.”
Tears spilled hot and fast down my cheeks.
I had never heard words like that from a man before in my entire life.
“I want to stay,” I said, wiping my wet face.
I took another small step, closing the distance between us.
“I just don’t know how to stop being scared of what happens next.”
Tom slowly raised his right hand, telegraphing the movement.
He rested his calloused palm incredibly lightly against my damp cheek.
The pure warmth of his skin sent a shockwave of comfort through me.
“You want the truth?”
He asked the question quietly.
I nodded against his hand.
“I’m scared, too,” he admitted.
“I care about doing right by you.”
“And when a man cares, he feels things deep down in his bones.”
He dropped his hand and led me over to the stove.
We sat by the fire, close but not touching.
The wind outside sounded like a dying animal.
But inside this room, everything was miraculously peaceful.
“Tom?”
I asked his name quietly.
“If I stayed… if I chose to give you my first night… would you wait until I wasn’t afraid?”
I closed my eyes, waiting for the demand that always came from men, but his next words completely shattered my reality.
