My Ex Tracked Me To The Ranch — He Had No Idea Who My Boss Was

Part 1
The dark purple bruise on my cheekbone was shaped entirely too clearly like a man’s fingers.
I tried my absolute best to hide it with my worn bonnet pulled low.
I kept my battered face turned just enough so no one in town would look too closely.
But absolutely nothing could hide the ugly mark from Dan Miller.
The morning was incredibly dry and suffocatingly hot.
Dust lifted in soft clouds around my worn shoes as I walked the long road toward the Miller Ranch.
I walked five exhausting miles entirely alone.
Every step was heavy with blind fear and desperate hope mixed together.
All I wanted was to teach the young children and keep my head down.
I desperately needed a place of peace.
When I finally stepped onto the wide wooden porch, my hands shook uncontrollably.
Before I could touch the iron knocker, the massive door swung forcefully open.
Dan Miller stood there, completely filling the entire wooden frame.
His broad shoulders stretched the fabric of his faded flannel shirt.
His physical presence felt incredibly solid and completely unmoving.
His cold, deeply observant eyes immediately landed directly on the side of my face.
I tried desperately to turn away from his piercing stare.
It was already entirely too late.
His strong jaw tightened visibly beneath his weathered skin.
“Look at me, Megan.”
His low voice reached deep inside my rapidly beating chest.
I lifted my trembling chin slowly.
Shame burned intensely hot in my watering eyes.
“Who did this to you?”
I opened my dry mouth, reaching blindly for the pathetic lie I had practiced.
“It was an accident, Mr. Miller.”
Dan stepped slowly forward, his heavy boots thudding against the solid wood.
“That isn’t from tripping.”
“Those are finger marks.”
His dark eyes sharpened exactly like a lethal hunter spotting sudden danger.
He knew absolutely there was no hiding the horrible truth now.
Saying the horrible name aloud felt exactly like swallowing actual fire.
“It was Craig.”
“I ended the courting three months ago, but he entirely refused to accept it.”
Dan remained completely, terrifyingly silent.
His large, calloused fists curled tightly at his strong sides.
“How long has this violence been going on?”
“The actual physical violence started exactly two weeks ago.”
“Did you go to the local sheriff?”
I shook my head weakly, wiping a tear away.
“Craig is entirely too powerful and wealthy in town.”
Dan’s jaw clenched so hard I thought a facial bone might actually snap.
Before another tense breath passed, small boots pattered rapidly inside.
Sam and Lily, Dan’s young eight-year-old twins, came bounding excitedly toward the doorway.
Lily stopped abruptly when she noticed the strange, bruised woman.
“Miss Megan, did you get terribly hurt?”
Dan moved with surprising, deeply protective speed.
He stepped smoothly in front of me, entirely blocking me from the innocent children’s line of sight.
“Miss Megan had a small, clumsy accident on the road.”
“Go set up your writing slates in the front room immediately.”
Once they were safely out of earshot, Dan turned his intense focus back to me.
“My study in exactly one hour.”
I nodded silently, completely overwhelmed by his highly protective presence.
For the next stressful hour, I tried my absolute hardest to teach the observant children.
When Betty the housekeeper came to take over, I walked slowly down the hall on trembling legs.
I stepped hesitantly into the large, beautiful wood-paneled study.
Dan stood silently by the massive window.
“Sit down.”
I obeyed without a single word, sinking nervously into a soft leather chair.
“I have already sent two of my absolute best men directly into town.”
“From this exact moment forward, you absolutely do not leave this ranch alone under any circumstances.”
I stared at him in complete, utterly profound shock.
“Mr. Miller, I can’t possibly ask you to take on this incredible burden for a stranger.”
Dan turned slowly away from the bright window.
“You didn’t ask me to do this.”
“You are here to take care of my children, and you are entirely under my protection now.”
“I absolutely do not let people who matter to me get hurt by cowards.”
His firm, undeniably sincere words washed over me like a wave of pure warmth.
I felt entirely, wonderfully safe for the very first time in my adult life.
Night slowly settled over the expansive Miller Ranch like a comforting, heavy dark blanket.
The large house grew incredibly quiet and perfectly, beautifully peaceful.
I genuinely believed the very worst of the imminent danger had finally passed.
I was completely, tragically, and entirely wrong.
Then I heard the horrific, entirely unforgettable sound.
Heavy boots stomped loudly and aggressively on the front porch.
Loud, slurred, highly aggressive voices shattered the total, comforting silence of the sleeping house.
A massive crash echoed violently as someone threw their entire weight against the heavy oak front door.
“Get your filthy hands off me, you absolute bastards!”
“I have every legal right to be here, and I’m taking what’s mine!”
My racing heart stopped entirely in my tight, panicked chest.
I knew that terrible, slurred, highly arrogant voice intimately.
It was Craig.
The front door crashed open, and there he stood, his eyes burning with a rage that promised I was never going to escape him.
