My Bumble Match Seemed Perfect — Until I Received a Message That Made My Blood Run Cold

Part 1

I never thought I would be one of those women asking strangers on the internet if I need to call the police.

Honestly, I thought my biggest problem this weekend was going to be picking the right gift for my best friend’s birthday.

I had just redownloaded Bumble after a long break from the dating scene, convinced by my friends that I needed to get back out there.

You know how it is when you first get back on the apps.

You feel a mix of dread and cautious optimism, hoping that maybe this time will be different.

I swiped through endless profiles of guys holding fish, guys taking blurry mirror selfies, and guys who only communicated in office quotes.

Then, I matched with a guy who seemed completely normal on paper.

He was thirty-one, verified, and lived right here in my city.

His photos showed a guy with a nice smile, holding a golden retriever in one picture and standing on a hiking trail in another.

He was objectively good-looking, and his profile didn’t have any of the usual glaring red flags that make you instantly swipe left.

Since women have to message first on the app, I sent a casual, friendly opener about the dog in his picture.

He replied almost instantly, which I initially took as a sign of genuine interest.

At first, the conversation was totally fine.

We bantered a bit about local coffee shops, and he seemed like a regular guy looking for a connection.

But then, things started shifting into a weird, overly intense gear.

He started calling me “princess” out of nowhere and telling me how beautiful I was in every single message.

He used excessive amounts of heart and drooling emojis, which felt incredibly jarring for someone I had known for less than twenty-four hours.

I brushed it off as him just being a bit overeager or maybe lacking some basic social grace.

I’m generally a polite person, so I just kept my responses friendly but tried to subtly steer the conversation to neutral topics.

When he asked what my plans were for the weekend, I didn’t think much of it.

I casually mentioned I’d be heading to a nearby city for a friend’s birthday celebration.

I told him I’d be taking the train tomorrow morning.

I didn’t tell him which train I was catching, what time I was leaving, or which station I was departing from.

He immediately replied, asking if he could come with me as my plus-one.

I laughed it off, telling him it wasn’t a wedding and I would be perfectly fine attending on my own.

That was when he started getting really intense.

He sent a message saying he was even more interested now that I was rejecting him.

My stomach did a tiny flip of unease, but I pushed the feeling down.

I told him to slow his roll, making it clear that he was coming on way too strong.

He apologized and promised to tone it down, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.

I told him I was going to bed and that we could talk tomorrow, hoping a night of sleep would reset the weird dynamic.

The next morning, I woke up early, curled my hair, and got dressed up for the party.

I wore a bright red wrap dress that always made me feel confident and a pair of comfortable black flats for walking.

I grabbed my overnight bag and took a rideshare to the bustling central station.

The station was packed with weekend commuters and tourists, a sea of anonymous faces.

I grabbed an iced coffee, checked the departure board, and found my platform without a second thought.

I took the train to the nearby city and spent the entire day celebrating with my friend.

We had a long, boozy brunch, walked around the historic downtown area, and enjoyed the beautiful, sunny weather.

I didn’t check the app all day, assuming he was just another slightly annoying match I would eventually fade out on.

When I finally got back to the city that evening, the station was significantly quieter.

I caught a cab back to my apartment, feeling exhausted but happy.

I locked my door, kicked off my shoes, collapsed onto the couch, and finally opened the app.

He had sent several messages while I was gone, asking how the party was and if I was going alone.

The sheer volume of messages was overwhelming.

I replied briefly, telling him I went with a friend and had a nice time.

Then he sent a message that made all the air leave my lungs.

He confessed that he had seen me yesterday.

He said he couldn’t wait until we met up, so he waited for me at the central station in the morning.

My heart started hammering against my ribs so hard it physically ached.

I stared at the glowing screen, trying to process what I was reading.

We had only matched the day before.

I typed back with shaking fingers, asking him how on earth he knew where to find me.

He told me he just assumed I’d be at the central station, so he went there and waited for me to show up.

He casually explained that he saw me leave, and then he went home, only to come back hours later to wait for my return train.

He claimed he wanted to say hi, but I was with my friend in the morning and a bunch of people when I got back.

I felt a sickening wave of nausea wash over me.

He had literally spent his entire day waiting at a public transit hub just to watch me from afar like prey.

He told me I should be flattered by his passion and that he was a go-getter.

I stopped breathing entirely as I read his next message, detailing the exact red dress and black shoes I had worn to the station.
