My Teacher Tortured The Class To Break My Friend — Until He Saw Her Arms

Part 1

Everyone in second period knew about Heather.

She sat in the back row, swallowed whole by an oversized gray hoodie.

She’d been wearing it for three weeks straight, through the humid September heat and the stifling afternoon sun.

Even in gym class, she kept it wrapped tight around her frame.

I sat one desk over from her, close enough to hear her ragged breaths.

I knew exactly why she kept those heavy sleeves pulled down to her knuckles.

She didn’t know I knew.

But I had caught a glimpse of her in the girls’ bathroom a month ago.

I had seen the thick white bandages wrapped around her forearms.

I had seen the faint red seeping through the gauze.

I had kept my mouth shut to protect her.

Then Mr. Mitchell decided to make an example out of her.

Mr. Mitchell paced the front of the classroom with his hands clasped behind his back.

He was the kind of teacher who thrived on absolute compliance.

His eyes scanned the rows of desks, searching for a weak point.

They landed on Heather.

The entire class seemed to hold its breath.

“Why aren’t you taking off your hoodie?”

His voice cut through the quiet room like a serrated knife.

Heather didn’t move a muscle.

She just pulled her sleeves down a fraction of an inch further.

“I’m not asking again.”

He stepped closer to her desk.

“Hoodies aren’t allowed in my class.”

I watched Heather shrink into herself, her shoulders curving inward.

I couldn’t just sit there and watch him corner her.

“She’s cold,” I said.

My voice shook slightly, but I forced myself to meet his stare.

Mr. Mitchell turned his head slowly.

“I wasn’t talking to you.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

“She gets cold easily, and it’s freezing in here.”

He snapped his attention back to Heather.

“Take it off, or it’s an automatic detention.”

Heather shook her head.

It was barely a millimeter of movement.

Mr. Mitchell’s jaw tightened.

“What was that?”

He leaned over her desk, casting a shadow across her face.

“Did you just shake your head at me in my own classroom?”

I pushed my chair back.

The metal legs scraped harshly against the linoleum.

“Just leave her alone.”

He didn’t even look at me.

“Sit down.”

I stepped into the aisle.

“She’s my best friend.”

I crossed my arms to hide my shaking hands.

“It absolutely concerns me.”

He turned fully toward me, his face turning a dark shade of red.

“One more word from you, and you’re both serving detention for a week.”

I glanced down at Heather.

She was gripping the edges of her sleeves so hard her knuckles were bone-white.

Mr. Mitchell let out a short, hollow laugh.

“Fine.”

He walked away from her desk.

“If she won’t take it off willingly, I’ll make her want to.”

He marched straight to the wall panel.

He flipped open the plastic cover on the thermostat.

He grabbed the dial and cranked it all the way to the right.

A heavy mechanical hum kicked in from the vents above us.

Within two minutes, the cool breeze vanished, replaced by a thick, suffocating wave of heat.

I wiped a bead of sweat from my temple.

“Mr. Mitchell, what are you doing?”

He walked back to his desk and leaned against the edge.

“Teaching a lesson about compliance.”

The digital display ticked up to 80 degrees.

Then 85.

Students started shifting in their seats.

A boy near the window asked if he could crack it open for some air.

Mr. Mitchell shut him down immediately.

“Nobody moves.”

He stared directly at Heather.

She was sweating profusely now.

Her face was flushed bright red.

Her chest heaved with quick, shallow breaths.

I slammed my palm against my desk.

“This is completely insane.”

I gestured around the boiling room.

“You’re torturing the entire class because of a jacket.”

He checked his watch casually.

“I’m teaching everyone that my rules exist for a very good reason.”

He pointed a finger at Heather.

“When she takes off the hoodie, I’ll turn the heat back down.”

The display hit 90 degrees.

The air felt thick and unbreathable.

Heather was visibly shaking now.

I stepped closer to her desk.

“Please,” I begged him.

I dropped my voice, hoping he would listen to reason.

“Just let her keep it on.”

I pointed to myself.

“I’ll take the detention.”

He didn’t blink.

“It’s not about detention anymore.”

He smiled a cruel, thin smile.

“It’s about respect.”

The thermostat flashed 95 degrees.

Heather’s breathing grew terrifyingly erratic.

She swayed slightly in her chair, looking like she was about to pass out entirely.

I couldn’t take it anymore.

“Just stop!”

I screamed the words at the top of my lungs.

The whole class went dead silent.

Mr. Mitchell let out a low chuckle.

“Looks like someone needs to cool down.”

He took a slow step toward Heather.

“Take it off.”

Heather finally broke.

Silent tears began streaming down her face, cutting through the sweat.

Her hands trembled violently as she reached up toward her collar.

Her fingers fumbled with the metal zipper.

I lunged forward to stop her.

“Heather, don’t.”

She didn’t look at me.

She pulled the zipper down with a harsh metallic scrape.

She let the heavy gray fabric slide off her arms.

She unzipped the hoodie, and the entire room went completely, dead silent.
