My Boyfriend Did The One Thing I Begged Him Not To Do — So I Walked Out

Part 1

I saw the waiter approaching with the dessert plate long before Craig even noticed.

The chocolate lava cake had the words ‘marry me’ written across the ceramic surface in thick raspberry sauce.

My stomach instantly dropped straight to the floor.

There was an actual camera crew setting up heavy equipment near the corner of our table.

This was absolutely not what we had talked about.

This was not even close to the explicit promise he had made me just weeks prior.

Craig had sat me down two months ago to ask how I would eventually want to be proposed to.

I had been completely clear and unwavering with my answer.

I told him I wanted something incredibly small and private.

Just the two of us, somewhere quiet where we could actually hear each other breathe without an audience.

I opened up to him that night about my severe, lifelong anxiety.

I explained in painful detail how I completely shut down and panic in front of large crowds.

He had held my hand tightly across his living room couch.

He had nodded his head sympathetically and looked me right in the eyes.

He swore up and down that he understood my fears completely.

He promised he would never put me in a position that made me feel trapped or on display.

But here we were in the exact middle of a packed, upscale dining room on a busy Friday night.

The waiter set down the dessert plate with an exaggerated, theatrical flourish.

Craig immediately stood up from his chair.

The entire bustling restaurant went completely quiet in a matter of seconds.

“Megan,” his voice carried loudly across the silent room.

“I have been waiting for this exact moment for two entire years.”

I felt the blood drain entirely from my face.

People at the surrounding tables were already pulling out their smartphones to record.

A woman sitting to my immediate left had tears welling up in her eyes.

The professional camera crew moved a few steps closer to get a better angle of my reaction.

I could not pull a full breath of air into my burning lungs.

Every single eye in that massive room was fixed directly on me.

Craig reached into his tailored jacket pocket and pulled out a dark velvet ring box.

The bright overhead chandelier lights caught the brilliant reflection of the diamond.

Someone in the back of the dining room gasped loudly at the sight of it.

He dropped down to one knee right there on the polished hardwood floor.

“You are the most amazing woman I have ever had the privilege to meet,” he announced to the room.

“You make me laugh every single day of my life.”

“You are smart and beautiful and impossibly kind.”

The words sounded completely rehearsed and hollow to my ears.

They sounded exactly like something he had practiced over and over in front of a mirror.

I looked closely at his face and realized a terrifying, heartbreaking truth.

He was not actually seeing me at all in this vulnerable moment.

He was seeing the captive audience surrounding us.

He was seeing the viral internet moment he had so carefully planned out behind my back.

“I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy,” he continued loudly.

“Will you marry me?”

The entire restaurant erupted in massive, deafening applause.

Strangers were cheering at the top of their lungs before I had even fully processed the question.

Someone in the back crowd started loudly chanting for me to say yes.

Dozens of other patrons quickly joined in on the rhythmic chant.

The camera crew was standing right next to our intimate table now.

The glowing red recording light of the main camera glared directly into my eyes.

Craig was smiling wider and more triumphantly than I had ever seen him.

I opened my mouth to speak.

Nothing but a dry, pathetic rasp came out of my throat.

My airway had completely closed up in a state of sheer panic.

This was the exact nightmare scenario I had literally begged him to avoid.

“Megan?” he prodded, still holding the box out.

His perfect, camera-ready smile wavered just a fraction of an inch.

I looked around the packed, suffocating room.

At least three hundred strangers were waiting with bated breath for my ecstatic reaction.

The busy kitchen staff had completely stopped bringing out food to watch.

A little girl in a floral dress was standing on her chair just to get a better view of the spectacle.

“Craig,” I managed to say quietly, keeping my voice meant only for him.

“Can we please talk about this privately?”

His confident smile vanished completely.

“What?”

He kept his voice low, but the sharp irritation in his tone was unmistakable.

“Just answer the question.”

I clutched my linen napkin tightly in my shaking lap.

“I need to talk to you alone right now.”

“Everyone is waiting,” he urged through gritted, smiling teeth.

“Just say yes for now and we can talk later.”

The chanting and cheering had slowly died down and the restaurant had gone awkwardly quiet again.

I could hear the faint, echoing clinking of silverware from the kitchen doors.

Someone a few tables over coughed into the heavy silence.

“You knew I didn’t want this,” I whispered furiously.

My hands were shaking visibly against the crisp white tablecloth.

“I told you exactly what I could not handle and you did it anyway.”

His face flushed a dark, angry red beneath the ambient lighting.

“Megan, do not do this right now.”

“Just give me an answer and stop ruining the moment.”

The camera lens shifted just a few inches closer to capture my horrified expression.

The entire restaurant went dead silent as I finally opened my mouth to give him my answer.
