A billionaire CEO begged me to be his fake wife — so I forced him to tell the truth.

A billionaire CEO begged me to be his fake wife — so I forced him to tell the truth.

Part 1

I stood near a towering marble column wondering if a building could physically reject someone.

The hotel ballroom was a blinding expanse of gold light, crystal chandeliers, and white flowers.

I had borrowed my navy dress from another counselor at the elementary school where I worked.

My shoes had already declared war on my feet ten minutes into the evening.

At twenty-six, I still got mistaken for a student teacher by parents who thought wisdom required wrinkles.

I did not belong in this wealthy, polished world, and the world clearly knew it.

Then Emily saw me.

The eight-year-old sprinted across the edge of the ballroom and threw both arms around my waist.

My face softened instantly as I looked down at her loose curls and dark velvet dress.

She had those brave, quiet eyes that had learned entirely too early how to watch adults for signs of leaving.

I asked my favorite tree house architect if she brought her colored pencils to survive the night.

She told me her uncle said gala guests didn’t need emotional honesty.

I glanced up as Brian entered the ballroom.

I recognized him immediately from the chaotic school pickup line.

He was always on time, always polished, and always polite in a way that kept everyone at arm’s length.

Then Dan approached him.

Dan was handsome in the way a customized hunting knife was handsome.

He shook Brian’s hand, smiled a predatory smile toward Emily, and asked where his wife was tonight.

Most people would have missed the rigid pause in Brian’s posture, but Emily certainly did not.

Brian’s phone vibrated violently against his ribs.

He checked the screen, and whatever he read drained the last drops of color from his face.

Dan’s smile widened as he watched the billionaire squirm.

Brian asked to speak with me for one minute, his voice low and tight.

I followed him into the quiet corridor.

Brian looked like a man trying to hold up a collapsing roof with one hand.

He bluntly asked me to pretend to be his wife for the evening.

I asked if he usually proposed in the tone of someone purchasing liability insurance.

He closed his eyes briefly and rubbed his temples.

He admitted Dan was trying to challenge his stability as Emily’s guardian to seize control of the board.

If his wife’s absence became public tonight, it could ruin his custody proceedings.

I told him his solution was to grab the nearest school counselor and turn her into emotional duct tape.

He flinched.

He looked at the floor and whispered that this was about Emily.

Emily stood a few steps away, pretending not to listen while clutching her little silver purse.

Her face carried the devastating weight of a child watching adults lie badly for her benefit.

I told Brian he didn’t need a fake wife.

I told him he needed to stop teaching his niece that love meant smiling while the world burned down.

His expression tightened, but he didn’t retreat into his corporate armor.

I promised to help him get through the night for Emily.

I told him I would only do this if he stopped pretending he was completely fine.

For the first time that evening, the polished CEO had no elegant, prepared answer.

A minute later, we walked back into the ballroom together.

Dan noticed our return immediately, his eyes darting between us with dangerous amusement.

He apologized with a smirk, claiming he thought Brian’s wife was someone else entirely.

I smiled so brightly it should have come with a legal warning.

I stepped into Dan’s space and explained that my name was a private family matter.

I told him everyone in the family had at least three names, two lawyers, and one secret nobody mentioned during dinner.

A major donor standing nearby laughed out loud.

Brian looked at me with something dangerously close to awe.

I felt like a woman holding a cracked vase together until a child could safely leave the room.

For the next hour, I became the CEO’s wife by sheer force of improvisation and stubbornness.

Brian moved beside me like a man walking a tightrope in freshly shined shoes.

Every wealthy donor seemed to know just enough to be dangerous.

Before each introduction, Brian murmured fragments of our invented marriage into my ear.

I listened, nodded, and decided his version of romance sounded like a tax filing with severe emotional problems.

When an elderly donor’s wife asked how we fell in love, Brian inhaled as if preparing a statement for federal review.

I saved him by laughing and saying it happened slowly against my better judgment.

Brian caught off guard, actually let out a genuine, rumbling laugh.

Emily watched us from the children’s table with wide, suspicious eyes.

Brian never let his guard down when she showed him drawings of tree houses with secret rooms.

Adults thought they were hiding their storms because they closed the curtains, but children could always hear the thunder rolling in the distance.

Later, we stood near the dessert table.

Brian actually seemed to breathe a little easier beside me.

Then the temperature in the room shifted.

Heather walked in.

She was beautiful in a quiet, expensive way, but her face looked exhausted up close.

Brian went completely, terrifyingly still.

Heather saw me standing at his side and understood the entire lie before a single word was spoken.

She bypassed the crowd and pulled him aside near a corridor lined with white orchids.

I watched from across the room, feeling Emily hide halfway behind my skirt.

I couldn’t hear every word, but I caught enough to understand Heather was absolutely done being the scaffolding holding his broken family together.

Brian begged her not to expose the truth tonight for Emily’s sake.

Unfortunately, Emily heard her own name and enough of the ugly truth wrapped around it.

The child’s face went completely blank, and before anyone could stop her, she turned and sprinted toward the dark hallway.
