My Husband Faked A Cousin For Years — Until Our 13-Year-Old Exposed Them On My Birthday

Part 1
It started like any other quiet Saturday morning.
I finally had time to breathe.
Craig had left early for one of his weekend strategy meetings.
Tyler was upstairs in his room.
I decided to tackle the clutter in Craig’s home office.
He always hated me going in there, claiming it was just boring work stuff.
The door wasn’t locked.
Coffee-stained mugs sat next to piles of unopened mail.
I started with the desk, sorting papers.
Then I opened the bottom drawer, the one he always kept shut.
Under a few old tax folders, I saw a glossy red envelope.
It didn’t look like the usual manila folders he kept everything else in.
Something told me not to touch it, but I pulled it out.
It wasn’t sealed, and there was no name on the front.
I opened the flap and tipped the contents into my palm.
Inside were two first-class plane tickets.
I blinked, trying to process what I was seeing.
Santorini, Greece, departing in two weeks.
It included a five-star couple’s resort, a private infinity pool, and a romantic dinner.
I flipped through the printed booking confirmation.
I held my breath as I checked the names printed on the tickets.
The first name was Craig.
The second ticket was completely blank.
There was no Brenda, no guest, just an empty space.
I sat down slowly in his desk chair.
My heart was beating too loud in my ears.
I tried to rationalize it, thinking maybe it was a surprise for our anniversary.
Then I heard footsteps outside the office.
Tyler peeked his head through the doorway.
I turned the tickets face down quickly on the desk.
He walked further into the room and glanced around.
His eyes immediately settled on the red envelope.
He casually asked if those were the Greece tickets.
I froze completely, the air leaving my lungs.
He pointed at the desk and calmly stated that he saw them last week.
He asked if they were for Dad and Aunt Heather.
My mouth went instantly dry.
Aunt Heather was Craig’s cousin, always around at holidays.
I asked Tyler how he knew about that.
Tyler shrugged, not looking joking or nervous at all.
He said he heard Dad talking to her and saw the emails.
He told me he saved them all.
The room seemed to tilt slightly on its axis.
He smiled a strange, calm smile.
He told me not to worry and that I would see soon enough.
He turned and left the office like nothing had happened.
I sat there in complete silence.
Craig and Heather, a couple’s resort, two tickets, a blank name, and my son saying I would see.
I didn’t sleep at all that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Tyler’s face.
He was too calm for a boy who had just revealed his father’s secret trip.
I lay in bed staring at the ceiling while Craig snored softly beside me.
The next morning, I made pancakes just like I always did.
Craig kissed my cheek and left for work earlier than usual.
Once I heard the front door lock, I called Tyler downstairs.
Taking his seat across from me at the kitchen table, Tyler pushed his plate aside.
I quietly brought up what he had said yesterday.
Nodding slowly, he admitted he knew I would want to know about the emails.
His eyes dropped to his hands as he described noticing Dad acting weird and smiling at his phone a lot.
Then Heather started coming over more, even when I wasn’t home.
Fidgeting with his sleeve, Tyler recounted seeing a message on Craig’s phone saying she couldn’t wait to have him all to herself in Greece.
I blinked hard, trying desperately to process the information.
Paying closer attention became his new daily routine.
Tyler noticed she always hugged Craig longer when she thought no one was looking.
I asked him why he hadn’t said anything sooner.
Looking away, he murmured that he didn’t want to hurt me unless he was absolutely sure.
Saving the evidence became his secret burden just in case.
My thirteen-year-old son had been silently protecting me.
Looking me directly in the eyes, Tyler promised to show me everything once I was ready.
Seeing all the evidence at once was the only way it would make sense.
I told him he had been really brave and that I was proud of him.
Two days passed before Tyler finally told me it was time.
He came into the living room holding his tablet and a USB cable.
He asked if we could go out to the garage.
We went out, and he pulled a black device from the cabinet.
He explained he had put a motion-activated camera under the dashboard a few weeks ago.
He plugged the camera into his tablet.
The video flickered to life, showing the inside of Craig’s car.
The passenger door opened, and Heather climbed in beside him.
She was laughing freely.
She leaned over and touched his arm.
Then she kissed him.
It was long, passionate, and intimately familiar.
No tears fell from my eyes.
My throat closed up, choking off any scream before it could start.
Ice flooded my veins, locking every muscle in my body into place.
They sat there for a while, talking and laughing.
Tyler reached out and paused the video.
Tapping the screen again, he queued up the next file.
That’s not the surprise I told you about, Mom, he said quietly.
That’s just part of it.
