My Husband Tried To Poison My Coffee — He Didn't Expect Me To Switch Cups

Part 1

I stood completely frozen in the exact center of my gleaming, sunlit downtown Chicago kitchen holding the custom-brewed dark roast coffee my husband Greg had just handed me with a seemingly loving smile.

The incredibly sharp, unmistakable, and terrifying smell of bitter almonds immediately rose from the rising steam and hit me right in the chest like a violent physical blow.

My eccentric, brilliant college chemistry professor back in Boston had specifically spent an entire lecture warning our graduating class about encountering that exact, deadly chemical scent in the real world.

If you ever happen to smell bitter almonds in a place where they absolutely shouldn’t be, he had told us with deadly serious eyes to drop whatever we were doing and run for our lives.

Every single primal survival instinct buried deep within my brain screamed at me to sprint out the heavy mahogany front door right then and there.

But I couldn’t simply run away just yet, not without knowing exactly what kind of nightmare I was actually leaving behind in my own home.

I watched my mother-in-law Brenda sitting at our breakfast table reading the newspaper.

Those cold eyes had never shown me any warmth.

She told me to drink the coffee Greg had made especially for me.

My heart pounded as I heard the shower running upstairs.

Greg had been acting incredibly strangely for the past six weeks, aggressively pulling away from me both emotionally and physically while guarding his smartphone like a massive state secret.

Late-night phone calls taken alone in his private study always happened in hushed, hurried, paranoid whispers that abruptly ceased the second I dared to turn the doorknob.

He violently slammed his expensive work laptop shut with a look of pure, unadulterated panic crossing his face whenever I simply walked into our shared living room to ask him a completely mundane question.

Just last Tuesday afternoon, I had accidentally stumbled upon his heavily encrypted, recently cleared search history while innocently looking for our joint tax documents on his home office computer.

He had spent countless, obsessive hours extensively researching completely untraceable fast-acting poisons, deadly chemical compounds, and the exact legal timelines for claiming massive life insurance payouts without drawing police suspicion.

I had desperately, foolishly tried to convince myself over the last few days that he was just doing some sort of obscure, highly confidential background research for a weird new corporate investment banking client.

Now, standing perfectly still in my own kitchen holding this deeply tainted ceramic cup of literal poison, every strange behavior and unexplained late-night absence suddenly made complete, horrifying sense.

Brenda watched my prolonged hesitation with a terribly thin, cruelly expectant smile slowly creeping across her perfectly made-up, heavily botoxed face.

I forced my rapidly shaking voice to stay completely steady and cheerfully offered to turn around and fetch her a fresh, steaming cup of coffee from the expensive espresso machine behind me.

I slowly turned my back to her and walked over to the sprawling granite kitchen counter on legs that felt like they were suddenly made of solid, unmoving lead.

The very second she arrogantly looked back down at the dense stock market numbers printed in her morning paper, I took a massive, shuddering breath and made my desperate, life-saving move.

With one incredibly fluid, perfectly practiced motion that I didn’t even know I was truly capable of pulling off under this much intense pressure, I quickly and silently switched our completely identical ceramic coffee cups.

Brenda’s completely harmless, plain black morning coffee now sat innocently directly in front of my own assigned leather chair at the large table.

Greg’s highly lethal, expertly poisoned brew was now resting dangerously right in front of her freshly manicured hands, just waiting for her to blindly take a massive sip.

Brenda absentmindedly picked up the tainted cup without a second thought, took a very long, deeply satisfying sip, and loudly praised her precious son’s absolutely incredible brewing skills to the high heavens.

I carefully brought my own safe cup up to my trembling lips and expertly pretended to drink my portion without letting a single drop of the dark liquid actually touch my tongue.

The first fifteen minutes of our continued morning routine passed with an agonizing, suffocating slowness as I silently waited for the inevitable, deadly chemical reaction to finally start showing itself.

I stared intensely over the rim of my cup as I watched a very slight, entirely uncontrollable tremor slowly start forming in Brenda’s dominant right hand just as she tried to turn a heavy page of her paper.

Twenty-five excruciatingly long minutes into the ordeal, her normally steady and measured breathing suddenly became noticeably shallow, incredibly rapid, and terribly ragged.

She abruptly slammed her expensive cup down onto the marble table with violently shaking, wildly uncoordinated fingers as her normally flushed face went an awful, sickly shade of pale gray.

At exactly thirty silent minutes since her very first sip of the bitter brew, her cold blue eyes went incredibly wide with a sudden, dawning, absolute realization of true panic.

She clumsily stumbled backward out of her expensive designer chair and desperately gasped through turning-blue lips that her throat was completely swelling shut and she simply couldn’t breathe.

That’s when she violently collapsed face-first onto the hard floor, frantically grasping at her own throat while her eyes completely rolled back into her skull.
