My Mother Treated Me Like a Maid in Her New Mansion — Then the Billionaire Heir Chose Me

Part 1
My father’s funeral was a quiet, heartbreaking affair back in our small farming town.
My mother, Brenda, didn’t bother to attend.
She had abandoned us years ago to marry Richard Davis, a real estate tycoon with a sprawling estate in the city.
When I earned a full academic scholarship to the university near her new home, she offered me a place to stay.
I naively thought it was an olive branch.
I hauled my battered suitcase up the sweeping gravel driveway of the Davis mansion, exhausted but hopeful.
The massive mahogany front door swung open to reveal Brenda draped in expensive silk.
She barely looked at me before gesturing vaguely toward a narrow hallway off the kitchen.
Living arrangements had apparently already been decided, as she told me to put my things in the maid’s quarters where they belonged.
I stood there frozen, the heavy suitcase handle cutting deep into my palm.
My new stepbrother, Tyler, walked past and wrinkled his nose in disgust.
He loudly complained to his mother that my luggage smelled like farm animals.
Then my half-sister, Heather, appeared at the top of the sweeping marble staircase.
She stared down at me with cold, evaluating eyes.
A cruel smirk crossed her face as she asked our mother why the new hired help looked so pathetic and unwashed.
Brenda sighed heavily and introduced me as her terrible mistake from a previous life.
I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat and dragged my bags to the tiny, windowless room.
Survival in this toxic house was my only goal until the campus dorms opened for the semester.
But Heather made it her personal mission to ensure I wouldn’t last the week.
On my first day touring the campus, Heather and her wealthy friends cornered me in the athletic building.
They shoved me hard through a heavy wooden door.
The heavy metal lock clicked shut behind me.
I stumbled forward into a row of metal benches.
The distinct smell of sweat and expensive cologne hit my nose.
Panic seized my chest when I realized I was standing in the middle of the elite men’s locker room.
Heather laughed cruelly from the hallway outside.
She yelled through the wood that she was going to broadcast a live video of the country trash invading the boys’ showers.
I grabbed the brass door handle and rattled it wildly.
It refused to budge.
Heavy footsteps suddenly echoed from the tiled shower area.
I backed away, bumping hard into a row of lockers.
A guy walked out with a white towel slung low around his hips.
Water dripped from his dark hair onto his broad shoulders.
My face burned hot enough to melt steel.
I covered my eyes quickly with both hands.
I stammered a frantic apology and explained that someone had locked me in against my will.
He walked closer, his bare feet completely silent on the damp floor tiles.
He gently pulled my trembling hands away from my face.
It was Craig Henderson.
Every student on campus knew him as the untouchable, brilliant heir to the Henderson family empire.
He looked at my terrified expression and then at the locked door.
An oversized athletic hoodie was tossed gently over my head to hide my face from the cameras.
He told me in a low voice to stay right behind him.
Craig kicked the heavy door so hard the metal hinges groaned.
It swung open violently to reveal Heather holding her phone up, ready to record my humiliation.
Her smug smile vanished instantly when she saw Craig towering protectively over me.
Ignoring her sputtering excuses completely, Craig escorted me safely back to the main courtyard.
Heather’s jealousy ignited into pure, dangerous hatred right then and there.
She spent the next week turning the mansion into a psychological war zone.
My dinner plates were purposely knocked onto the dining room floor.
She instructed the household staff to stop washing my laundry or preparing my meals.
Keeping my head down, I focused only on my upcoming university classes.
But Heather couldn’t stand the fact that Craig had started seeking me out on campus.
One evening, I was walking up the grand staircase toward my tiny room in the back.
Heather stood at the top landing, deliberately blocking my path.
Leaning in close, she whispered venomously that I would never belong in her pristine world.
Then she deliberately threw herself backward down the last few carpeted steps.
She landed on the marble floor below with a dramatic, piercing scream.
Brenda and Richard rushed out of the drawing room in a panic.
Heather pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly at me.
Sobbing hysterically, she claimed I pushed her because I was violently jealous of her perfect life.
Brenda didn’t even bother to ask for my side of the story.
Grabbing my arm roughly, she dragged me down the stairs.
She told me I was a violent, ungrateful burden who didn’t deserve her charity.
I stood there in the foyer, blinking back furious tears of absolute betrayal.
I swore I hadn’t laid a single finger on her.
Heather wiped her fake tears and suddenly gasped loudly.
She patted her bare neck with frantic, exaggerated movements.
She shrieked that her custom diamond birthday necklace was suddenly missing.
The entire house went dead silent.
Heather glared at me and declared that I must have ripped it off her neck when I shoved her.
Richard’s face hardened into a mask of absolute disgust.
He ordered the household staff to lock the front doors immediately.
Brenda marched toward me with her hands outstretched, demanding a search.
I was ordered to empty my pockets and hand over my canvas backpack.
Clutching my frayed bag tightly to my chest, I braced myself for the worst.
I knew with chilling certainty that they were going to plant the jewelry on me to get me arrested.
The heavy brass knocker on the front door suddenly echoed sharply through the foyer.
One of the maids nervously cracked the door open.
A tall silhouette stepped purposefully past her into the tension-filled room.
Craig Henderson stood under the crystal chandelier, his intense gaze locked entirely on me.
He asked the room at large if there was a problem here.
Heather immediately changed her tone, putting on a sickeningly sweet voice.
She told Craig he was just in time to watch them catch a filthy thief.
Craig didn’t even look at her.
He reached slowly into his tailored jacket pocket.
Pulling out a glittering diamond necklace, he let it dangle from his fingers.
He looked directly at my step-sister and asked if this was what she was missing.
