My Son Tried To Break Down My Door With A Sledgehammer — Then He Saw Who Was Standing Behind Me

Part 1

At 6:00 in the morning, my front door began to shake.

My daughter-in-law was screaming my name, hysterical, as if the house belonged to her.

I had changed all the locks the night before.

Minutes later, my son arrived with a sledgehammer in his hand.

I’m coming in anyway, he shouted through the wood.

But before I tell you how I ended up changing the locks to protect myself from my own child, I need to go back three months.

I was a fool who believed that a mother’s love could conquer all.

It was a Tuesday in December when Tyler called me with a strange, dull voice.

He told me they had lost their apartment and needed a place to stay.

My house had four bedrooms, and since my husband Dan passed away five years ago, it felt too big and too quiet.

I welcomed Tyler, his wife Megan, and their two children into my home with open arms.

They arrived with more boxes than could fit in an SUV.

I thought they were moving in temporarily, but Megan had a different plan.

She immediately started changing my home.

First, it was the dining room curtains I had sewn myself.

She took them down, claiming they blocked the light and made the house depressing.

Then, she hired an industrial cleaning service without asking me.

They threw away Dan’s entire vinyl record collection, the ones we used to play on Sunday afternoons.

I sat on the garage floor where his records used to be and wept.

Megan just rolled her eyes and told me not to be so dramatic over objects.

My neighbor Heather warned me that Megan was erasing my history to write hers, but I didn’t want to cause trouble for my son.

Then, on what would have been Dan’s birthday, I caught Megan on her laptop.

She was selling the fine china Dan had bought for our thirtieth anniversary.

It was worth five thousand dollars, but she was selling it for a thousand to pay for her storage unit.

When I confronted her, Tyler took her side.

He told me I was a selfish old woman who cared more about plates than my own grandchildren.

I let her sell the china, hoping it would buy some peace.

Instead, Megan came home the next day with bags of expensive designer clothes.

Two weeks later, Megan started acting strange and lethargic.

She told me she was bleeding from places she shouldn’t and needed an MRI and a biopsy.

She cried, saying they had no health insurance and the tests would cost fifteen thousand dollars.

I went to the bank that afternoon and sold my emergency stocks to give her a cashier’s check.

I spent two weeks terrified that my grandchildren were going to lose their mother.

Then, Heather saw Megan at the mall and recognized the clinic she had been visiting.

It wasn’t an oncology center.

It was a cosmetic surgery clinic.

Megan had used my fifteen thousand dollars to get a nose job.

When I confronted them, Megan simply touched her new nose with pride.

Tyler sighed with exhaustion and asked if it really mattered what the money was used for as long as she felt better.

They threatened to leave and take the grandchildren away if I kept making a fuss.

The idea of returning to the silence of my empty house terrified me more than losing the money.

I swallowed my pride and told them to forget about it.

I thought that was the worst they could do to me.

I didn’t know they wanted absolutely everything.

It was a cold night in late February when I woke up with a dry throat.

I went downstairs for a glass of water, trying not to make a sound on the wooden steps.

The house was dark except for the moonlight coming through the hallway window.

I was halfway to the kitchen when I heard whispering coming from the back patio.

It was Tyler and Megan.

I stood paralyzed by the kitchen door, hidden in the shadows.

Megan was smoking a cigarette, telling Tyler that they just needed a few more months to soften me up.

She said she would convince me to sign the house over to Tyler for my own security.

Tyler asked what would happen after I signed the house over.

Megan laughed and said they would put me in a cheap nursing home near the industrial park.

She calculated that they could sell my house for eight hundred thousand dollars.

They planned to buy a luxury condo downtown and use the rest of the money to start a business.

Tyler hesitated for a moment, but then he agreed.

He actually said out loud that his mother had already lived enough, and they deserved the house.

Those words came out of the mouth of the baby I had carried for nine months.

I felt something break inside my chest, but it wasn’t my heart.

It was the last illusion that my family loved me.

I went back upstairs as quietly as I could, my hands shaking.

I sat on the edge of my bed and looked at the only photograph of Dan I had left.

I heard every word they said in the dark, and in that moment, the naive mother died and a very different woman was born.
