Single Dad Janitor Got Yelled At & Fired by CEO – But Shockingly Became Her Only Hope
The Midnight Dismissal
David Carter’s hands smelled faintly of bleach as he wrung out the mop. The echoes of his footsteps bounced off the pristine marble floor of Crestfall Enterprises.
It was nearly midnight. The building’s glass walls reflected the cold drizzle outside.
This was the time of night he liked best. These were the quiet hours when no one looked down on him, and he could just work in peace.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a text from Lily: “Good night Dad, don’t work too hard, love you.”
He smiled despite his aching back. At thirteen years old, she was already more thoughtful than most adults he knew.
Everything he did was for her. Every double shift and every skipped meal was for her.
The elevator’s chime broke the silence. He turned, expecting maybe a security guard.
Instead, the woman he had only seen from a distance stormed out. Victoria Hail, CEO of the company, was flanked by the scent of expensive perfume and the chill of someone used to being obeyed.
Her sharp eyes swept over the lobby. They stopped on a damp streak across the floor where his mop had just passed.
“What is this?” she snapped, her heels clicking like gunshots. “Do you even know what you’re doing?”
“The investor board meets here in the morning, and it looks like a bus terminal.” David straightened.
“Ma’am, I was just—” “I don’t want excuses,” she cut in.
“I want results, and if you can’t handle basic cleaning then you don’t belong here. Consider this your last night.”
The words hit harder than he expected. He opened his mouth, but she had already turned away.
She was speaking into her phone as if he no longer existed. By the time he finished his shift, the sting of humiliation had given way to a heavier dread.
Rent was due in a week. Lily’s asthma medication wasn’t cheap.
He walked home in the drizzle. He hid his tears so no one on the street could see.
