Single Dad Janitor Got Yelled At & Fired by CEO – But Shockingly Became Her Only Hope
An Urgent Crisis in the Rain
The next morning, Lily was sitting at their small kitchen table, her hair a tangle. She was sketching superheroes in her notebook.
“You’re home early,” she said, surprised. David forced a smile.
“Yeah, thought I’d make breakfast for a change.” He didn’t tell her he’d been fired.
He couldn’t, not until he had a new job lined up. She didn’t need that weight on her small shoulders.
Over the next week, he filled out applications and went to interviews. He heard the same polite rejections.
“We’ll be in touch” became a phrase he hated. He pawned his watch to keep the heat on.
One evening, walking back from another dead-end interview, David cut through a side street. He wanted to avoid the rush hour crowd.
That’s when he saw it. A sleek black car was pulled haphazardly to the curb, hazard lights flashing in the gloom.
A woman stood beside it, her hair damp from the drizzle. Her voice was tense as she spoke on her phone.
Even before she turned, he knew it was her. It was Victoria Hail.
She didn’t notice him until he was almost beside her. “David,” she said, startled.
He stopped, unsure if he should even respond. “Evening.”
She looked different now, less composed. Her hands were trembling.
“I—I’m waiting for an ambulance. It’s my son, Ethan; he’s in the back seat.”
Her voice cracked. “He can’t breathe.”
David’s chest tightened. “Asthma.”
She nodded quickly. Without another word, he opened the car door.
A boy, maybe eight years old, sat hunched over wheezing. His small hands were clutching at his chest.
