No One Could Handle The Billionaire’s Twin Daughters—Until A Single Dad Janitor Did The Impossible

The Silent Penthouse

12 nannies in 14 months. That was the number Victoria Ashford stared at on her tablet screen as another resignation letter landed in her inbox. The penthouse on Central Park West gleamed with cold perfection around her.

Italian marble floors, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan, and furniture that cost more than most people’s annual salaries surrounded her. Somewhere in the east wing, her seven-year-old twin daughters sat in absolute silence. They refused to speak to yet another professional who had just walked out in tears.

Victoria deleted the resignation without reading it. She had built a $3 billion pharmaceutical empire from nothing. She had negotiated with heads of state and crushed competitors, but she could not reach her own children.

18 months ago, their father had died in a car crash. Since then, Lily and Rose Ashford had become ghosts in their own home. They ate when told and attended therapy with vacant expressions. But they did not speak to the parade of specialists.

Victoria watched them through the crack in the door. They sat identical in matching pajamas. Rose held a stuffed rabbit that had belonged to their father. Lily traced patterns on the foggy glass. Neither acknowledged Victoria’s presence.

“Good night girls,” Victoria said.

They turned back to the window without a word. The next morning brought another crisis. The agency had sent their final candidate, a woman with 30 years of experience. She lasted four hours.

“I’m sorry Miss Ashford,” the woman said, gathering her coat with trembling hands.

“I’ve worked with difficult children before. But these girls—”

She shook her head.

“They looked right through me like I wasn’t even human. Like I was a piece of furniture they were waiting to be removed.”

Marcus Webb had been the night janitor for three years. After his wife’s death, he took the job to be home for his son. His supervisor, Frank, approached him with an unusual request.

“The penthouse needs extra cleaning tonight,” Frank said.

“Just don’t steal anything and don’t talk to the kids.”
