CEO Saw His Baby Talking to a Poor Woman—He Froze When She Said, “I Used to Be Your Wife’s Nurse.”
Shadows of Success and the Fountain Encounter
The sun had just begun to rise over the city skyline casting golden light across the glass towers and busy streets below. The morning sun rose over the gleaming towers of the city its rays piercing through the tall glass windows of Miles Enterprises.
Inside one of those towers sat Ethan Miles the 38-year-old CEO of Miles Enterprises a man known for his precision power and an almost mechanical devotion to work. Inside the top floor office Ethan Miles the CEO sat behind his mahogany desk his eyes fixed on the screen.
To the world he was the perfect image of success a man who had it all but behind the flawless suits the fancy cars and the penthouse views Ethan’s life was colder than the marble floors he walked on. To the world Ethan was a symbol of success.
Behind that image was a man too busy to notice how far he had drifted from the simple joys of life. He had built his empire from nothing starting as a struggling college dropout who had once slept in his car. He commanded hundreds of employees.
He signed milliondoll deals and lived a life most people could only dream of. He had everything: luxury cars a grand mansion and a loving family yet lately he had been a stranger to his own home. The more success he gathered the more distant he became.
He became distant from his friends from his family and lately even from his wife and their three-year-old daughter Lily. His wife Emily had been the anchor in his chaotic life a kind-hearted woman who had once been a nurse. She left her job when Lily was born.
She believed in love in small joys in moments that couldn’t be bought. Emily had often told him that he was missing out on the best moments of their daughter’s childhood but business was always his excuse. Ethan however was always chasing something bigger.
His calendar was filled with meetings but never with time for his family. One Sunday morning Emily asked him to take Lily for a walk in the park while she prepared for their anniversary dinner that evening. Emily persuaded him to take Lily while she prepared lunch.
Ethan reluctantly agreed mostly to avoid another argument. He reluctantly agreed thinking it would be a quick outing. So he put on his designer jacket grabbed his phone and took Lily’s small hand as they stepped into the bright autumn air.
He dressed in his crisp white shirt took Lily by the hand and they stepped into the warm sunlight. The park was alive with laughter children chasing bubbles and old couples feeding pigeons. The park was filled with laughter and the scent of blooming flowers.
Lily with her curls bouncing in her tiny pink jacket zipped up ran ahead pointing at every flower every dog and every squirrel she saw. Lily with her small backpack and pink shoes ran ahead pointing at every butterfly and dog she saw.
For once Ethan felt his stress fade a little. He even smiled. For once Ethan put his phone away and smiled. It had been a long time since he felt peace like this.
But that peace was short-lived as Ethan checked his phone for new emails. As he sat on a bench to check an email he suddenly realized Lily wasn’t beside him. Lily slipped away. When he looked up she was gone.
Panic surged through him. Panic hit him instantly. He jumped up scanning the park. He called her name once twice three times his voice trembling.
“lily,” he shouted his heart pounding.
He ran along the path scanning every corner every bench and then near the fountain he saw her. Lily was standing beside a woman sitting on the ground. Then he saw her by the fountain talking to a woman sitting on the ground.
The woman’s clothes were worn her hair messy her hands trembling slightly as she handed Lily a small paper flower she had crafted from an old napkin. The woman looked poor her clothes faded her hands trembling slightly.
She was making a small flower out of paper and showing it to Lily. Ethan rushed over his heart pounding. Ethan rushed over breathing heavily.
“lily,” he said sharply pulling her back “you don’t talk to strangers.”
“lily,” he said sharply pulling her back “you can’t talk to strangers.”
The woman looked up at him her eyes were tired but kind. There was something familiar in them something that stopped him for a moment. The woman looked up at him calmly her eyes were tired but kind.
“i’m sorry” she said softly “i didn’t mean to scare you she just reminded me of someone.”
“i’m sorry sir,” she said softly “she just reminded me of someone.”
Ethan frowned glancing at her again. Her face was pale and though life’s hardships had clearly taken their toll there was a grace to her something that didn’t belong to the streets. Ethan frowned.
“it’s fine,” he said stiffly turning to walk away.
“it’s fine,” he muttered about to walk away.
But as he did Lily tugged at his sleeve. Lily tugged at his hand.
“daddy” she whispered “she said she knows mommy”.
“daddy,” she said innocently “she said she knows mommy”.
Ethan froze. Ethan froze and turned back.
