The Dream and the Bombshell
My wife demanded our Dream House be in her name. When I refused she threatened divorce.
I agreed but a week later she begged me to reconsider only for me to say no. Hello Reddit eyes plus here.
You know this whole thing started out so simple. Laura and I had this dream of building a house together, a real dream house.
We’d spent years talking about it, saving for it, sketching out every little detail. I’m talking about picking cabinet handles and debating the color of the front door.
We even debated where the damn outlets should go in the kitchen. It was supposed to be our house, the symbol of everything we’d worked for.
So when the time came to get the paperwork ready I thought it’d be the easiest part of the whole process. But out of nowhere Laura drops this bombshell on me.
She says, “I think the house should be in my name, you know just for protection.” At first I thought she was joking so I laughed a little.
But when I looked at her face I realized she was dead serious. I asked, “Protection from what? From me?”
“This is our house Laura,” and she just shrugs and says, “It’s not like we’re planning to divorce, but I’ve seen too many cases at work where joint ownership causes problems”.
Now let me tell you I felt like someone had just yanked the rug out from under me. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
I mean this wasn’t some random piece of property, it was our Dreamhouse. And she was already talking like she was preparing for a life without me.
We went back and forth about it for days. I tried everything to make her see my side.
“Laura,” I told her, “we’ve built this life together. This house is supposed to represent us, not just you”.
But she wouldn’t budge. One night during dinner she just exploded.
She slammed her fork down and said, “If you can’t trust me on this maybe we shouldn’t even be married”.
I just sat there staring at her. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Is that what this is about?” I asked. “Because it sounds to me like you’re the one who doesn’t trust me”.
She didn’t say anything. She just got up grabbed her purse and walked out.
