My wife demanded our dream house be in her name. When I refused, she threatened divorce. I agreed

The Ultimatum and the Aftermath

That morning I woke up with this pit in my stomach. I kept replaying her words in my head.

“Maybe we shouldn’t even be married.” I mean what kind of foundation is that to build a life or a house on?

So I sat her down that evening. “Laura,” I said, “I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said”.

“I thought about the house, about the marriage, about everything and maybe you’re right. If we can’t even agree on something as basic as this maybe we shouldn’t be married”.

Her eyes widened. “Wait what are you saying?”

“I’m saying if you want the house to be in your name fine. But if that’s more important to you than our partnership then I think we need to end this”.

You could have heard a pin drop. She just stared at me, her face pale as a sheet.

“You’re agreeing to a divorce?” she whispered. “I don’t want a divorce,” I said.

“But I’m not going to be in a marriage where trust is one-sided.” She moved out a few days later.

I won’t lie it was hard, really hard. I kept questioning myself, wondering if I’d done the right thing.

Then a week later she shows up at my door. She’s holding a coffee in one hand and this little notebook in the other.

The one we used to sketch out ideas for the house. She looked like she’d been crying for days.

“James,” she started, “I made a mistake. I let my fears get the better of me”.

“Please can we start over? I’ll put your name on the house the deed whatever you want just don’t give up on us”.

And you know what? For a split second I almost said yes, almost.

But then I thought about everything. I thought about the way she’d made me feel, the threats, and the lack of trust.

I couldn’t unsee any of it. So I shook my head and said, “Laura I care about you but I can’t go back to a marriage where I’m always wondering when the next threat will come”.

“I deserve better, we deserve better.” It’s been a few months since then and I’ve started building a new dream.
