The Rift and the Teenage Rebellion

My stepdaughter disowned me as her father until she needed college tuition. I told her to ask her real dad instead.

Hello, Reddit Eyes Plus here. For years, I had been more of a father to Olivia than her biological dad ever was.

I met her mother, Sarah, when Olivia was just six years old. Her dad, Mike, had been in and out of her life, mostly out.

I was the one who attended parent-teacher conferences. I helped her with school projects and sat through countless dance recitals.

I thought we had a decent relationship, even if it was never perfect. Then came the teenage years.

At sixteen, Olivia changed suddenly. I was the enemy.

Anything I said was met with an eye roll or a sarcastic remark. One day, we got into a heated argument over a simple house rule.

No phone at the dinner table. It escalated quickly, and she screamed at me.

“You’re not my real dad and you can’t tell me what to do! You’re nothing to me! You’re nobody!”

I won’t lie; it stung. But I swallowed my pride and let it go.

I told myself she was just a teenager lashing out. Sarah tried to mediate, saying Olivia didn’t mean it.,
