The Tuition Confrontation
But the words stuck with me. Fast forward to her senior year of high school.
College applications rolled in. Olivia was accepted into her dream school.
That’s when she and Sarah sat me down to talk about tuition. “Your dad and I were hoping you could cover at least half,” Sarah said hesitantly.
I raised an eyebrow. “Half?” Sarah nodded.
“We can manage some, but it’s expensive and Olivia really wants this.” I leaned back in my chair.
I crossed my arms and looked Olivia in the eye. “I think you should talk to your real dad about that.”

“You made it very clear, Olivia. I’m not your dad. I’m nobody.”
“So this nobody won’t be paying for your college.” Tears welled up in her eyes.
“But you helped raise me!” “That was different. I was mad.”
“You can’t seriously be holding that against me.” I shrugged.
“I helped raise you, yes. I was there when your dad wasn’t.”
“But I won’t be disrespected in my own home and then expected to foot the bill when it’s convenient.” Sarah jumped in.,
“Come on, don’t do this. She didn’t mean it.”
“Then maybe she should have thought about that before she said it. Actions have consequences.”
