My Fiancé Brought His Best Friend To Dinner — And One Stolen Moment Destroyed My Perfect Life

Part 1
I had my entire life planned out, down to the exact month I would become Craig’s wife.
I was the perfect, obedient daughter of a demanding father who expected nothing less than total compliance.
Craig was everything society told me I should want in a husband.
He was wealthy, deeply respectful, and entirely predictable in his affections.
When he proposed to me last autumn, I accepted immediately because it was the sensible thing to do.
I convinced myself that quiet companionship was a perfectly acceptable substitute for actual passion.
Then, on a random Tuesday evening, Craig brought his oldest friend to our dinner party.
Tyler had just returned from years of traveling abroad.
He was not conventionally handsome like my kind-hearted fiancé.
Tyler was all sharp angles, dark eyes, and a terrifying intensity that made the air in the room feel incredibly thin.
When Craig formally introduced us, Tyler’s piercing gaze locked onto mine with an unsettling flicker of recognition.
He bowed low, his bare fingers brushing the delicate silk fabric of my glove.
A sudden jolt of pure electricity shot all the way up my arm.
I snatched my hand back instantly, my heart suddenly hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
Over the next few weeks, Tyler seemed to be everywhere I went.
Craig, bless his trusting and oblivious heart, insisted on including his best friend in all of our social engagements.
We attended a crowded opera, and I felt Tyler staring at me from the adjacent box instead of watching the stage.
His dark eyes tracked my every movement with a predatory focus that made my skin flush.
At afternoon garden parties, he would stand silently across the lawn.
His expression remained completely unreadable, but his gaze burned right through my polite facade.
I hated myself for it, but I began searching the room for his tall frame the moment I arrived anywhere.
My companion, Megan, quickly noticed the dangerous shift in my usually perfect behavior.
She cornered me in my bedchamber and warned me that I was playing an incredibly dangerous game.
I vehemently denied it, clinging to my safe, proper engagement like a drowning woman holding a life raft.
But my body constantly betrayed my careful lies.
If Tyler stood near me, my breathing hitched and my hands trembled so badly I had to hide them in my skirts.
The agonizing tension finally shattered during a weekend house party at Craig’s sprawling country estate.
The first two days were a polite, excruciating torture of shared meals and supervised group walks.
I sat there watching Craig happily discuss our future nursery arrangements.
Meanwhile, my traitorous thoughts drifted constantly to the dark-haired man sitting quietly at the end of the table.
On the third night, I found myself entirely unable to sleep.
The massive house was completely silent, the other guests having retired hours ago.
I slipped out of my room and wandered down to the library, desperate to find a book to distract my racing mind.
I didn’t bother lighting a candle, relying instead on the pale moonlight streaming through the tall, arched windows.
I reached blindly for a leather-bound volume on the nearest shelf.
A tall shadow suddenly detached itself from the dark corner of the room.
“You shouldn’t be down here,” Tyler’s voice rasped in the heavy darkness.
I froze completely, my hand still hovering nervously near the spine of the book.
He took a slow step forward, emerging fully into the pool of silver moonlight.
His white evening shirt was partially unbuttoned, and his dark hair was messy from running his hands through it.
He looked exactly like a man pushed to the absolute edge of his sanity.
“I could easily say the exact same thing to you,” I managed to whisper, my voice shaking terribly.
He crossed the remaining distance between us in three long strides, stopping mere inches from my trembling body.
The intoxicating scent of his cedar and smoke cologne made my head spin wildly.
“I am leaving for my northern estate tomorrow morning,” he said, his jaw clenched so tight it looked genuinely painful.
The sudden, unexpected words hit my chest like a physical blow.
“Where exactly are you going?”
I asked the question while hating how incredibly breathless I sounded.
“Anywhere that is far away from you,” he replied, his tone thick with bitter frustration.
He told me he simply couldn’t stand watching me prepare to marry another man.
He confessed that the memory of my face haunted his every waking hour and ruined his sleep.
He fully knew he was betraying his best friend just by standing in the dark and having these forbidden thoughts.
But he loved me, fiercely and undeniably, and it was destroying him from the inside out.
The raw confession hung heavily in the air between us, terrible and devastatingly beautiful.
I had spent my entire twenty-three years doing exactly what was expected of me by my family and society.
I had never once acted on my own selfish desires or taken a single risk.
I stared up at the man who was offering me the absolute ruin of my pristine reputation.
And then, before I could stop him, he closed the distance between us and kissed me.
