For a moment she seemed unsure as if she couldn’t believe someone had actually offered. Then relief washed over her face and she slowly sat down.

“Thank you” she murmured her voice filled with gratitude. “I really appreciate this”.

David nodded with a small smile. He grabbed the handrail to steady himself as the bus started moving again.

That should have been the end of it but what happened next stunned everyone. “You people always trying to play the hero” a cold bitter voice cut through the air.

David turned his head to see where it had come from. A middle-aged man dressed in an expensive suit sat nearby with a smug expression.

David frowned slightly. “Excuse me?”.

The man leaned back in his seat. “I said people like you are always looking for attention trying to act like saints while making the rest of us look bad”.

A heavy silence fell over the bus. Some passengers looked away pretending not to hear.
