A Mistake at the Airport Led to a Miracle for This Single Dad…

A Cup of Coffee and a New Perspective

Just then Jack’s phone buzzed. His mom’s connecting flight from Chicago had been grounded due to weather.

She wouldn’t be arriving until the next morning,. “Well that figures,” Jack muttered.

“No backup, no sitter, and two interviews next week I still haven’t prepped for”. Rachel tilted her head. “Sounds like a rough day”.

Jack shrugged. “It’s life. We manage”.

She hesitated for a moment. “Listen, I was supposed to get picked up by my company but they’re running late”.

“I’ve got time. How about we grab a coffee?”. “I know a little place upstairs and your daughter’s already decided I’m family”.

Jack gave her a surprised look then chuckled. “Why not”.

An hour later they were sitting in a quiet corner cafe, steam rising from their cups. Emma sipped hot chocolate happily, scribbling a new mermaid sketch while the adults talked.

Jack shared bits of his story: his wife Lily passing from cancer 3 years ago and the struggles of balancing parenting and work. He spoke of the guilt of never feeling like he was doing enough.

Rachel listened intently, never interrupting. When he mentioned working in logistics and supply chain management before getting laid off twice in 2 years, she leaned in with more interest than pity,.

“Sounds like you’ve held a lot together for a long time,” she said gently. “That takes strength”.

Jack exhaled, grateful for the lack of judgment. “Most days I don’t feel strong. I just feel tired”.

Rachel nodded. “Sometimes surviving is strength”.

Emma, bored with adult talk, climbed into Rachel’s lap with no hesitation. “Can you come live with us? You’re nice”.

Jack reddened. “Emma!”. Rachel just smiled and hugged her.

“Thanks sweetheart. That’s the nicest offer I’ve had all week”. A moment later, Rachel’s phone buzzed.

“My driver’s here”. She stood gathering her bag and turned to Jack.

“Look, I know this is going to sound odd,” she said, reaching into her coat and handing him a card. It was a plain white one with a logo and a name: Alden and Company. Rachel Alden, CEO.

Jack blinked. “Wait. CEO?”.

Rachel smiled. “Yes. And based on our conversation, I think I might have something for you”.

“Come by tomorrow morning at this address, 10 sharp. Bring your resume”. Jack stared, baffled. “Why me?”.

She paused then said something that would echo in his head for weeks: “Because I’ve been looking for someone like you”,.
