A Single Dad Accidentally Proposed to His CEO Colleague—Her Reply Shocked Me
Breaking Down the Walls
The following Monday, Mark arrived at work looking more stressed than I’d seen him in months. He collapsed into his chair beside me, rubbing his temples. Lily’s school was closed for teacher development all week.
He explained the after-school program was full, his regular sitter was on vacation, and his parents were in Florida.
“I have no idea what I’m going to do.”
Before I could offer suggestions, Elise appeared at our cubicle.
“Everything okay?”
Mark explained his childcare crisis, clearly embarrassed to be discussing personal problems with the CEO.
“I have a solution,” Elise said after a moment’s thought.
“My sister runs a small day camp during school breaks. They have two spots open this week. I could put in a word.”
The relief on Mark’s face was palpable.
“That would be amazing. Thank you.”
That Friday, Mark insisted on picking Lily up himself to thank Elise’s sister personally. I tagged along, curious about this connection to our boss’s private life. The day camp was housed in a charming converted Victorian in the historic district.
When we arrived, children were playing in the fenced yard under the watchful eyes of two women. One of them, tall with the same striking blue eyes as Elise, waved us over.
“You must be Mark,” she said warmly.
“I’m Clare, Elise’s sister. Lily’s been wonderful—such a bright girl.”
As if summoned by her name, Lily came running, her face lit with excitement.
“Dad! Dad, guess what? Ms. Elise taught us how to make robots today!”
Mark and I exchanged confused glances.
“Ms. Elise?”
Clare smiled.
“My sister stops by on Fridays to run a little STEM workshop for the kids. They adore her.”
Before Mark could respond, Elise emerged from the house carrying a tray of juice boxes. She froze when she saw us, looking uncharacteristically flustered.
“You’re early,” she said, setting down the tray.
Lily ran to Elise and hugged her around the waist.
“Can I show Dad my robot?”
Elise’s professional demeanor melted as she smiled down at Lily.
“Of course you can.”
As Lily dragged Mark toward the craft table, I found myself alone with Elise for the first time ever.
“This is unexpected,” I said.
She met my gaze steadily.
“Is it?”
“You never mentioned you volunteer with children.”
“There are many things I don’t mention at work, Daniel.”
Her tone wasn’t defensive, just matter-of-fact.
“The company demands a certain persona. It’s easier to maintain boundaries.”
“But you’ve let Mark and Lily cross those boundaries,” I observed.
Something vulnerable flickered across her face.
“Some people are worth making exceptions for.”
Over the next few months, I watched a careful friendship develop between Mark, Lily, and Elise. It was never inappropriate or unprofessional at work, but the walls were definitely coming down. Mark started smiling more.
Lily talked about “Miss Elise” constantly, and our formidable CEO occasionally let slip personal details she’d never shared before. Then came the company retreat, a weekend at a mountain resort to build team cohesion and strategize for the coming year.
Mark had been stressed about it for weeks.
“I can’t leave Lily for three days,” he told me.
“But I can’t miss this retreat either. It’s mandatory.”
To everyone’s surprise, Elise announced that employees could bring family members to enjoy the resort amenities while we worked. It was unprecedented and clearly designed with Mark in mind, though no one dared say it aloud.
The retreat transformed our understanding of Elise. Away from the office in casual clothes with her hair pulled back, she was almost unrecognizable. She joined pickup volleyball games, laughed openly at jokes, and spent every free moment with Lily.
She even taught Lily to swim in the resort pool. On the final night, the company hosted a formal dinner. Mark had bought Lily a special dress for the occasion, and she twirled around, showing it off to everyone.
When Elise appeared in an elegant blue gown, Lily gasped.
“You look like a princess!” she exclaimed.
Elise knelt down to Lily’s level.
“So do you, sweetheart.”
The dinner was magical, with good food, flowing conversation, and a sense of genuine connection among colleagues who usually kept things strictly professional. After the meal, the resort staff cleared space for dancing.
Mark, who’d had exactly two glasses of wine—one more than his usual limit—turned to Elise.
“Would you like to dance?” he asked, extending his hand.
The room didn’t exactly fall silent, but those of us nearby definitely held our breath. Elise hesitated only briefly before accepting. They moved well together, maintaining a respectful distance while clearly enjoying each other’s company.
When the song ended, Lily rushed over.
“My turn! My turn!”
Mark laughed and lifted his daughter onto his feet to dance with her. Elise stepped back, watching them with an expression I couldn’t quite decipher—wistful, perhaps, or longing.
Later that evening, I found Mark on the resort’s terrace, staring out at the mountains.
“Penny for your thoughts?” I asked, joining him at the railing.
“I’m confused, Daniel,” he admitted.
“For three years, I’ve been focused solely on being a dad and doing my job. Nothing else mattered. And now—”
“Now you have feelings for Elise,” I finished for him.
He didn’t deny it.
“It’s complicated. She’s my boss. And even if she wasn’t, I have no idea if she sees me as anything more than an employee with a cute kid.”
“Have you considered that maybe she’s just as confused as you are?”
“That maybe she’s been alone at the top for so long she doesn’t know how to reach out?”
Mark shook his head.
“It doesn’t matter. I can’t risk Lily getting attached to someone who might not stay. She’s already lost one mother figure.”
“From what I’ve seen, that ship has sailed. Lily adores Elise.”
“All the more reason to be careful,” Mark insisted.
