A Single Dad Chased Away A Woman’s Harassers, Not Realizing She Was A Billionaire Who Fell For Him
Building a Life Together Beyond the Boardroom
Selia smiled, the kind of smile that came from something deep. Sawyer squeezed her hand.
“We should get home. Homework before dinner.” As they walked, Selia realized she had more power than most people on the planet.
But in that moment, she’d never felt more grounded. It had everything to do with the man beside her and the boy holding her hand.
The gala was in full swing by the time Selia stepped out of her car. The museum was a wash in glittering gowns and tuxedos.
CEOs and tech moguls moved like planets in an orbit of power. This was her world, but tonight it felt hollow.
Sawyer hadn’t returned her call that morning. She had invited him, but she hadn’t expected him to say yes.
She took a breath and stepped inside. Her assistants flanked her, but she barely heard them.
Her eyes searched the room hopefully. Then she realized how ridiculous it was; he wouldn’t come to this world.
“Selia?” The board chair was talking about an acquisition, but her mind was on a construction trailer.
Then a voice spoke behind her. “You weren’t kidding about this being a whole other planet”.
She spun around. Sawyer stood there in a suit that didn’t quite fit, but he looked like the only real thing in the room.
His hair was combed back, and he wore no tie. “You came”.
“I almost didn’t. I had to borrow this from my neighbor. It’s from when he got married in ’03”.
She laughed, her chest loosening. “You look like yourself”.
“Figured if I showed up pretending to be someone else, you’d see right through me.” “I would have,” she said softly.
A photographer approached. Selia grabbed Sawyer’s hand. “Stay in the shot”.
“You sure?” She didn’t answer; she just pulled him beside her and turned toward the flash.
Later, they slipped out a side door into the garden. “I wasn’t sure I belonged in there,” Sawyer said.
“Everyone was curated.” “They are,” she said, “but that doesn’t mean they’re happy”.
He glanced at her. “Are you?” “I’m getting there”.
They sat on a stone bench. “Liam’s at my sister’s tonight. She’s been dying for an excuse to spoil him”.
“That’s good. He deserves it.” “He asked if you were coming to his school’s spring fair next Friday”.
She looked at him, surprised. “He wants me there?” “I think you made an impression”.
She smiled. “I’ll make time.” He nodded, then grew quiet.
“I’ve been thinking about what you said about not wanting to run anymore.” “I meant it”.
“So did I. I’ve been alone a long time because I didn’t want to risk letting someone in who wouldn’t stay”.
“I had Liam to think about. It’s not just me anymore.” “I know,” she said.
“I’d never ask you to forget that. I know what it feels like to look at someone and think this could be everything”.
“I don’t care about the bank accounts,” he continued. “But I do care about that woman who sat on a job site in jeans”.
She blinked quickly. “I didn’t plan any of this.” “Neither did I,” he replied.
He pulled out a small folded piece of paper. “It’s from Liam. He made me bring it in case you were here”.
She unfolded it to see crayon scribbles shaped into a lopsided heart. Inside it said, “You can be my other grown-up if you want”.
Her hand flew to her mouth. “I told him we’d talk about it,” Sawyer said gently.
“But the truth is, I want that too. I want something real”.
She looked up at him, eyes shining. “You do?”.
Without fanfare, she stepped into his arms and kissed him. It was full, certain, and rooted in everything unspoken.
“I want a life with you. Not just weekends or moments in between meetings. All of it”.
“Then let’s build it,” he said.
Weeks later, they were at the spring fair. Liam tugged on her hand. “We’re a team now, right?”.
She crouched beside him. “The best kind.” Sawyer reached for her other hand, anchoring her between them.
There were no cameras or press here. Just three people under a banner that read “Family Fun Day”.
When Sawyer first walked into Selia’s penthouse, he stopped inside the doorway. Liam’s hand was still in his.
“Why now?” he asked. “Because you said you wanted to build something together,” she said.
“I realized I’ve been keeping half of myself locked behind doors. You deserve to see all of it”.
“Can I go look at the piano?” Liam asked. Sawyer nodded. “Go ahead”.
“It’s just a home,” Selia said. Sawyer looked at her again. “Is it?”.
“If you’re in it, yes.” She led him past the art-lined hallway into a sitting room.
There were handwoven throws and even a stack of Liam’s favorite books waiting on the coffee table.
“You did this since the fair?” “I did it yesterday”.
“I want you both here,” she said. “I want a life that fits all three of us”.
Sawyer stepped closer. “You’re offering a lot.” “I’m offering what I have”.
“I’ve never felt like anyone built a space for me before.” “I didn’t build it,” she whispered. “I just opened the door”.
He kissed her then with a certainty that made her knees weaken. It was full of promise.
Later, on the rooftop garden, Sawyer asked, “Do you ever slow down?” “I didn’t,” she said, “not until you”.
“What happens next?” “You move in,” she said. “I already made space for Liam in the northeast room”.
“And for my tools?” “There’s an entire storage room that hasn’t been used in years”.
Sawyer was quiet for a long beat. “You’re not afraid of what people will say?”.
“No one who matters to me would say the wrong thing. And you’re the only opinion I care about”.
He turned toward her. “Then I’m all in”.
The next morning, they packed boxes. Selia helped them carry boxes up the elevator herself, insisting on it.
Three weeks later, Selia stood in front of board members at a summit in Milan. Her gaze kept drifting to the back of the room.
Sawyer and Liam stood there, both smiling like they belonged there. Because now, they did.
When the summit ended, she went straight to them. “You crushed it,” Sawyer said, slipping his arm around her.
“I had the best distraction,” she replied. Liam held up a sketch pad of her as a superhero.
They took a water taxi to a quiet corner of the canal. Selia leaned against Sawyer’s chest.
“I wanted to give you a quiet moment to just be,” he said. “I love you”.
She turned to look at him fully. “I love you more than I ever thought I’d be allowed to again”.
Back at the penthouse, Sawyer murmured, “I was thinking… we should make this official”.
“I want to marry you. Because when I wake up beside you, I know I’m exactly where I belong”.
“Yes,” she whispered, “a thousand times yes”.
They exchanged vows in the rooftop garden a month later. Liam held the rings, and the city lights twinkled below.
“Think we’ll make it?” Sawyer asked. “We already did,” she whispered.
He built her a breakfast nook. She canceled board meetings to build sandcastles.
They built something real. Together, they were home, always.
