“A Single Dad Meant to Text His Friend… But Sent “My Boss Is So Hot” to His Boss Instead

A New Family and the Final Irony

The company picnic was held in a sprawling park with activities for employees’ families. Emma raced from one attraction to another. Her face was painted like a butterfly while Marcus tried to keep up.

“Your daughter has endless energy,” Victoria commented, appearing beside him. Emma had just joined a group of children playing tag. “Tell me about it,” Marcus laughed.

“I’ll be asleep by 8:00 tonight.” Victoria looked different today. She was more relaxed in casual clothes with her hair loose around her shoulders.

Several employees had done double-takes seeing their normally formal boss in jeans and a t-shirt. They watched Emma play for a while. “Would you like to get some lunch?” Victoria asked.

“The catering table is set up.” They filled plates and found a quiet spot under a tree away from the main crowd. As they ate, Victoria asked about Emma’s school, her friends, and her interests.

Marcus found himself talking more than he had in years. He was surprised by Victoria’s genuine interest. “You’re good with her,” he observed.

Emma came running over and Victoria patiently helped her when she spilled her drink. Victoria shrugged, but he caught the pleased look in her eyes. “Kids are easier than executives,” she said.

“They tell you exactly what they’re thinking.” “Speaking of which,” Emma announced, flopping down beside them. “I think you should come over for dinner sometime, Ms. Reyes.”

“Daddy makes really good lasagna,” Emma added. Marcus choked on his drink. “Emma!” he managed to say.

“What?” she asked innocently. “You said we should invite friends over more often. And Ms. Reyes is your friend, right?”

Victoria’s eyes danced with amusement. “I’d like that, Emma, if your dad is okay with it.” Put on the spot, Marcus could only nod.

“Sure,” he said. “Maybe next weekend.” And so Victoria came to dinner the following Saturday.

She arrived with a bottle of wine for the adults and a book for Emma. It was a collection of stories about women scientists that immediately captivated the girl. Dinner was surprisingly comfortable.

Victoria helped Emma set the table while Marcus finished cooking. The conversation flowed easily throughout the meal. After dinner, Emma insisted on showing Victoria her room.

She proudly displayed her collection of rocks and minerals. “She wants to be a geologist,” Marcus explained when they returned to the living room. “Or an astronaut, or possibly a veterinarian who specializes in dinosaurs.”

“Ambitious,” Victoria smiled. “I wanted to be a firefighter ballerina at her age.” The evening stretched on pleasantly after Emma went to bed.

Marcus and Victoria talked for hours. They discovered shared tastes in music and films. It was nearly midnight when Victoria finally glanced at her watch and sighed.

“I should go,” she said reluctantly. “Early meeting on Monday.” At the door, there was a moment of awkwardness.

Marcus wasn’t sure if he should shake her hand, hug her, or simply say good night. Victoria solved the dilemma by leaning in and kissing his cheek. “Thank you for dinner,” she said softly.

“It’s been a long time since I enjoyed an evening so much.” After she left, Marcus touched his cheek where her lips had been. He felt like a teenager again.

This was dangerous territory because she was still his boss. However, something had shifted between them. They were moving beyond professional respect into something more complex.

The following weeks brought more dinners. Sometimes they were at his apartment, and sometimes at restaurants with Emma in tow. They were careful at work, maintaining professional boundaries.

After hours, they were gradually becoming something more than colleagues or even friends. One evening after Emma had gone to bed, they sat on Marcus’s small balcony. They shared the last of a bottle of wine.

“Can I ask you something personal?” Victoria said, her voice quiet in the night air. “Of course,” Marcus replied. “Are you happy, Marcus, with your life as it is?”

He considered the question seriously. “I’m happier than I was a year ago,” he said finally. “After Ila died, I didn’t think I’d ever feel normal again.”

“Everything was just about surviving for Emma’s sake,” he explained. He looked at Victoria with sincere eyes. “Lately, I’ve started to remember what it feels like to want more than just survival.”

Victoria’s expression softened. “I understand that. After my divorce, I threw myself into work.”

“It was easier than admitting how lonely I was,” she said. “And now?” Marcus asked quietly. She met his gaze steadily.

“Now I’m sitting here with you,” she said. “I’m wondering if we’re making a terrible mistake or the best decision of our lives.” The tension between them had been building for weeks.

They both knew the professional complications and the potential fallout. But in that moment, those concerns seemed distant. Marcus reached for her hand.

“I haven’t felt this way about anyone since Ila,” he said. “It terrifies me.” “I know,” Victoria whispered. “I’m scared too.”

Their first kiss was tentative, a gentle exploration of new territory. When they pulled apart, Victoria’s eyes remained closed for a moment. She seemed to be memorizing the feeling.

“We’ll need to be careful,” she said when she opened them. “At work.” “I know,” Marcus agreed.

“We can keep it professional there,” he added. “No one needs to know until we figure this out ourselves.” Victoria nodded and then smiled.

“Emma already knows, though, doesn’t she?” Marcus laughed softly. “Emma knew before either of us did, I think.”

Their relationship developed slowly. Both were cautious about disrupting the balance they’d found. At work, they maintained their professional roles.

After hours, they were building something neither had expected to find. Emma was thrilled. She adored Victoria and soaked up the female attention she’d missed.

Victoria approached the relationship with Emma carefully. She never tried to replace Ila. instead, she offered her own form of support and affection.

Three months after that first kiss, Victoria was offered a promotion. She became executive director overseeing multiple departments. The position meant Marcus would no longer report directly to her.

This removed the professional conflict in their relationship. The night she got the offer, they celebrated at her apartment. Emma was tucked in at home with a trusted sitter.

“This changes everything,” Marcus said, raising his glass. “Congratulations; you deserve it.” Victoria clinked her glass against his.

“It does change things,” she agreed, “in more ways than one.” She set down her glass and took his hands. “Marcus, these past months have been unexpected.”

“I wasn’t looking for this for you or Emma,” she said. “But now I can’t imagine my life without either of you.” Marcus felt his heart race.

“What are you saying?” “I’m saying I love you,” Victoria said simply. “Both of you.”

“I want to see where this goes without hiding or worrying about company politics.” Marcus pulled her close. “I love you too. And Emma adores you.”

Victoria rested her head against his chest. “I never thought I’d want a family. My career was everything.”

“But you two have shown me what I was missing,” she added. “We’re not exactly a conventional family,” Marcus pointed out. “No,” Victoria agreed with a smile. “We’re better.”

Six months later, Marcus stood in his kitchen smiling at his phone. This time, he was very careful about who he was texting. “My fiance is so hot,” he typed to Dave.

“Still can’t believe she said yes.” His phone buzzed with a reply, but not from Dave. “Wrong number again, Mr. Chun,” Victoria wrote.

“Some things never change,” she added with a winking face. “Love you too. See you and Emma at home soon.”

Marcus laughed, shaking his head at the cosmic irony. One mistaken text had changed the course of his life. It brought him from embarrassment to happiness and from loneliness to love.

When Victoria arrived home, Emma ran to greet her with a hug. Marcus watched from the doorway, his heart full. “Ready for dinner?” he asked as Victoria kissed him.

“Hello.” “Always,” she replied, her eyes warm with love. “I’m ready for everything with you too.”
