A Struggling Dad Delivered Pizza to a Mansion, Not Knowing the Customer Was a Billionaire Falling
Science, Sincerity, and Second Chances
Friday night brought another order from the Jennings estate. Catherine was on a video call when he arrived.
She was dressed in a tailored corporate blazer. She motioned him in while continuing her business discussion.
She spoke about tech revolutionizing medical imaging to a man on her screen. Ryan stood awkwardly, taking in her commanding tone.
This was clearly a woman used to authority. She ended the call and turned to him with an apologetic smile.
“Sorry about that, work never ends,” she said. Ryan asked what kind of work revolutionized medical imaging.
Catherine shrugged as if it were nothing special. She founded a biotech company developing diagnostic tools.
“You founded a company?” Ryan tried to keep the surprise hidden. She confirmed she started it in her garage.
Now the company has 300 employees. This success made Ryan’s two jobs seem even more insignificant.
“That’s impressive,” he said. “It’s just work,” she replied, though her eyes revealed pride.
She asked if he had thought about the Saturday science event. Ryan nodded and said Maddie was excited.
Catherine’s face lit up at the news. She told him to give his name at the gate.
Ryan hesitated, saying they wouldn’t fit in with her usual crowd. She studied him for a moment before responding.
“The usual crowd is overrated,” she told him. “Bring Maddie, that’s all that matters.”
Saturday arrived with perfect weather and a buzz of excitement. Maddie changed outfits three times for the occasion.
She settled on a space-themed dress with spinning planets. Ryan wore his one pair of non-work jeans and a blue shirt.
“Daddy, is this a real castle?” Maddie asked at the gates. Her eyes were wide with wonder.
“It’s just a very big house,” he answered. Maddie wondered if a princess lived there.
Ryan thought of Catherine as brilliant, successful, and beautiful. “Something like that,” he replied.
The grounds featured colorful tents and science demonstrations. Children raced between exhibits with excited voices.
Adults in expensive attire discussed charitable contributions. Ryan immediately felt out of place with his worn shoes.
Maddie was oblivious to any class distinctions. Her attention was captured by a demonstration of volcanic eruptions.
“Ryan, Maddie, you made it!” Catherine approached them. She was radiant in a simple sundress.
The dress likely cost more than Ryan’s monthly rent. Something in her genuine smile eased his discomfort.
“This place is amazing,” Maddie exclaimed. “Are you the princess who lives in the castle?”
Catherine laughed and crouched to Maddie’s level. “Not a princess, I’m afraid, just Catherine.”
She told Maddie she had heard she was quite the scientist. “I know all the planets in order!” Maddie announced.
Catherine listened with sincerity as Maddie recited the planets. Ryan felt a surge of affection for Catherine.
Catherine introduced Ryan to various guests without any hint of difference. She explained concepts to Maddie in child-friendly terms.
“You’re good with kids,” Ryan observed. Catherine’s smile faltered slightly at the remark.
“I always wanted children, it just hasn’t happened yet,” she said. Ryan gently replied that there was still time.
She mentioned that fertility treatments might work but stopped abruptly. “Sorry, oversharing with the pizza guy,” she said.
“I’m off duty,” Ryan reminded her. “Just a regular dad today.”
Their eyes met with a current of understanding. A man’s voice interrupted, saying the director was looking for her.
“Duty calls,” she sighed. She asked them to stay until the end to talk more.
Ryan watched her effortlessly navigate the social interactions. She would wave or wink at them as if sharing a secret.
By the end, Maddie had a bag full of science projects. The crowds thinned until only staff remained.
“Did you have fun?” Catherine asked with a satisfied smile. Maddie declared it was the best day ever.
“Science changed my life,” Catherine said sincerely. “I hope it might inspire you too.”
Ryan noted it was time to head home for homework. Catherine’s disappointment was barely concealed as they prepared to leave.
“Would you both like to see something special inside?” she asked. Maddie nodded enthusiastically, and Ryan followed.
She led them to a home office with a massive display. It showed a live feed from space.
“Is that the International Space Station?” Ryan asked. Catherine confirmed she keeps the feed running while she works.
Maddie was amazed that Catherine could see space from her house. “I watch the astronauts sometimes,” Catherine said.
Catherine turned to Ryan with a confession. “I didn’t eat pizza all those times I ordered it,” she said.
Ryan raised an eyebrow, noting he figured as much. He joked that nobody actually likes anchovies.
“I wanted to see you again,” she admitted. She acknowledged the situation was unusual and perhaps inappropriate.
“Relationships,” Ryan interrupted as the word hung between them. Catherine’s cheeks flushed at the mention.
She took a deep breath to start over. She asked if Ryan and Maddie would like to have dinner.
“A proper dinner, not pizza,” she specified. Her nervous rambling was at odds with her confident business persona.
“You’re asking me out?” Ryan asked with a smile. “Yes, is that okay?” she admitted.
Ryan noted he came as a “package deal” with Maddie. He mentioned the complications of his life and his ex-wife.
“I know it’s complicated,” Catherine said softly. She felt more connected to him than people she’d known for years.
Ryan searched her face for any sign of insincerity. He asked why she chose him when she could have anyone.
“Because you looked at me like a person,” she said. She added that he was cute when flustered about tips.
Ryan laughed and accepted the dinner invitation. Their first date took place in Ryan’s small apartment.
Maddie served as an enthusiastic chaperon for the evening. Catherine arrived with groceries and insisted on cooking.
“My first apartment could fit in this kitchen,” she told him. She chopped vegetables with surprising skill.
Ryan learned she grew up middle class in Ohio. She built her company through determination and countless sleepless nights.
“For the first 5 years, I lived on ramen,” she admitted. Success and money only came recently to her.
Ryan asked if she bought the mansion as a reward. She admitted she bought it because she thought successful people did.
“Now I rattle around in there like a marble,” she confessed. She often slept in the media room because bedrooms felt vast.
Her vulnerability touched Ryan deeply. Maddie piped up, saying home is about who is in it with you.
“Your daddy is very wise,” Catherine said with a warm smile. The evening was filled with laughter and science questions.
Catherine helped with Maddie’s bedtime routine. Ryan told her she was a natural with his daughter.
“She’s an amazing kid,” Catherine replied. She told Ryan he was doing a wonderful job.
Ryan admitted some days are harder than others. He shared the story of how Maddie’s mom left them.
The experience made him cautious about who he let into Maddie’s life. Catherine promised to be thoughtful about her place there.
“You’re not what I expected, Catherine Jennings,” Ryan said. She leaned closer and asked if she seemed untouchable now.
When they kissed, it felt both inevitable and surprising. It deepened with an intensity that left them breathless.
