A Struggling Dad Took a Woman to the Hospital—Unaware She Was a Billionaire Who’d Change His Life

The Proposal

Xavier stood in the hospital corridor, his arms crossed as he watched Vivien from the doorway. She had fallen quiet, her fingers tracing the edge of the thin hospital blanket.

Her expression was unreadable. He wasn’t sure if she was still in pain or just lost in thought. Either way, he wasn’t sure why he was still there.

He should have left. He had work in a few hours, bills that wouldn’t pay themselves, and a daughter who needed him.

But something about Vivien Laurent—this woman who had collapsed in the street, barely conscious—kept him rooted in place. She turned to him suddenly, her gaze steady.

“You don’t strike me as someone who helps strangers without expecting something in return.”

Xavier’s jaw tensed. “You don’t know anything about me.”

Her lips twitched, not in amusement, but in something closer to curiosity. “No, I don’t. But I’d like to.”

He exhaled, running a hand through his hair. “Look, I didn’t stick around because I wanted anything. I just wanted to make sure you were alright. And now that you know I am, I should probably go.”,

Vivien studied him for a moment longer, as if debating something. Then she reached for the call button beside her bed and pressed it.

A few seconds later, a nurse entered. “When can I be discharged?” Vivien asked.

The nurse glanced at the chart in her hands. “The doctor wants to keep you overnight for observation.”

Vivien’s expression hardened slightly, but she nodded. “Fine.”

The nurse left, and once again silence stretched between them. Xavier shifted on his feet.

“You have someone you can call?”

Her gaze flickered, something unreadable passing through her eyes. “I don’t need to call anyone.”

That answer sat strangely with him. A woman like her, dressed in designer clothes, wearing jewelry that probably cost more than his car, should have had someone waiting for her.

A driver, a bodyguard, a family member. But she had no one. She must have sensed his thoughts because she tilted her head.

“You think it’s strange, don’t you? That I have no one here.”,

He didn’t answer, but the slight shift in his stance gave him away. Vivien exhaled, looking away.

“I’ve learned that when people are only around because of what you can offer them, they don’t tend to stick around when you actually need them.”

It wasn’t what he expected her to say. He had assumed she was one of those untouchable socialites surrounded by people who catered to her every whim. But now he wasn’t so sure.

Lily stirred in the chair beside him, rubbing her eyes. She looked up at Vivien, then at her father.

“Are we leaving soon?”

Xavier lifted her into his arms, pressing a kiss to her temple. “Yeah, sweetheart.”

Vivien’s gaze softened as she watched them. “You’re a good father.”

He let out a short laugh, though there was no humor in it. “I do what I can.”

She hesitated, then said something that caught him completely off guard. “Let me help you.”

Xavier frowned. “Help me how?”

Vivien sat up straighter, her green eyes locked onto his. “You helped me without hesitation. You didn’t know who I was, and you didn’t ask for anything in return.”,

She glanced at Lily, then back at him. “Let me do something for you, the way you did for me.”

His shoulders tensed. “I don’t need charity.”

“I’m not offering charity,” she said firmly. “I’m offering an opportunity.”

Xavier narrowed his eyes, suspicion creeping in. “What kind of opportunity?”

Vivien hesitated, and for the first time since he met her, she looked uncertain. Then, as if making a decision, she met his gaze head-on.

“I own a company. A big one,” she admitted. “I won’t bore you with business talk, but I have a personal estate that needs maintenance.”

“My staff has been unreliable, and I need someone I can trust,” she continued.

He frowned. “You don’t even know me.”

“I know enough,” she countered. “I know you work hard. I know you’re raising your daughter on your own.”

“And I know you wouldn’t have stayed tonight if you didn’t have a good heart.”

Xavier clenched his jaw. He wasn’t used to people reading him so easily.

Vivien continued. “The job pays well enough that you wouldn’t have to work three shifts a day just to make ends meet.”,

Everything in him told him to say no. He didn’t trust things that sounded too good to be true.

But then he felt the weight of Lily in his arms, her tiny fingers clutching the fabric of his worn-out shirt. He thought about the late nights, the unpaid bills, the exhaustion that never truly faded.

Maybe, just maybe, this wasn’t a trap. Maybe it was a way out. Finally, he exhaled.

“I’ll think about it.”

Vivien smiled. “That’s all I ask.”

As Xavier carried Lily out of the hospital, he couldn’t shake the feeling that his life was about to change in ways he never expected.

Xavier stood outside Vivien’s estate, staring up at the sheer enormity of it. The wrought iron gates had opened for him moments ago, revealing a long cobblestone driveway lined with towering oak trees.

At the end of the path stood a mansion so massive it made his stomach tighten. It wasn’t just wealth; it was the kind of opulence that existed in another world, one far from his own.

Lily clutched his hand, her eyes wide. “Is this a castle?”,

He almost laughed, but the awe in her voice made him pause. “Something like that,” he murmured.

They had taken a bus most of the way before a sleek black car picked them up at the last stop, courtesy of Vivien.

He had spent the entire ride wondering if he had made a mistake. He didn’t belong in a place like this.

Before he could turn around and reconsider, the front doors opened and Vivien walked out. She was dressed simply in a cream-colored blouse and tailored slacks.

But she still exuded an effortless elegance that made Xavier acutely aware of his worn-out jeans and faded shirt. “Right on time,” she said, her expression unreadable.

Xavier cleared his throat. “Figured I should at least see what this job actually is before I agree to anything.”

Vivien nodded, then knelt to Lily’s level. “And you must be Lily.”

Lily looked up at her father for reassurance before nodding. Vivien smiled.

“Would you like to see the garden? There’s a pond with some very friendly ducks.”

Lily’s face brightened. She turned to Xavier. “Can I?”,

He hesitated, but Vivien gestured toward a woman standing nearby. “This is Marget. She’s been with me for years. She’ll stay with Lily while we talk.”

Marget, an older woman with kind eyes, smiled warmly. “We’ll have some fun, won’t we?”

Lily looked between them before nodding. Once they were gone, Xavier exhaled.

“All right, let’s hear it.”

Vivien motioned for him to follow her inside. The foyer alone was bigger than his entire apartment, with a grand staircase that spiraled upward and chandeliers that shimmered like something out of a dream.

“I won’t waste your time,” Vivien said as they walked. “The estate is large, and I need someone to oversee the grounds.”

“You won’t be alone; there’s a staff. But I need someone trustworthy to manage everything.”

Xavier frowned. “I don’t have experience running a place like this.”

She glanced at him. “You manage three jobs and raise a child on your own. I’d say you’re more than capable.”

He didn’t like how easily she saw through him. They stepped into a sunlit sitting room where she gestured for him to take a seat. Instead, he remained standing,.

“What’s the catch?” he asked.

Vivien arched a brow. “Why do you assume there is one?”

“Because nothing comes this easy.”

She studied him for a moment before answering. “The only condition is that you live here.”

Xavier stiffened. “Live here?”

“There’s a private cottage on the property. It’s fully furnished, with more space than your current apartment.”

His jaw clenched. “You looked into my situation.”

“I needed to know if this offer would actually help you,” she admitted. “And I know it will.”

He hated that she was right. Before he could respond, a sharp knock interrupted them.

A man in a crisp suit stepped inside, his presence instantly shifting the energy in the room. Vivien’s expression hardened.

“What is it, Richard?”

The man, Richard, adjusted his cuffs. “Your brother is here.”

Vivien’s jaw tightened. Xavier frowned.

“You didn’t mention family.”

She exhaled, her gaze darkening. “Because family isn’t always a good thing.”

Before he could ask what she meant, a new voice echoed through the room. “Vivien.”,

A tall man with the same piercing green eyes strode in, his expensive suit tailored to perfection. But where Vivien’s presence was poised, his was sharp, like a blade waiting to cut.

“I see you’re collecting strays now,” the man said, his gaze flicking to Xavier.

Xavier’s fists clenched at the condescension in his tone. Vivien’s voice was cool.

“What do you want, Julian?”

Her brother smirked. “I heard you’ve been making some interesting decisions lately. Thought I’d see for myself.”

“This is my business, not yours.”

Julian’s gaze turned calculating. “You’re taking in a man you barely know, and his child. That’s reckless, even for you.”

Xavier had had enough. “I don’t know who you think you are, but I don’t need your approval.”

Julian let out a low chuckle. “Oh, I like him. He’s got a spine.”

Vivien stepped closer to Xavier, her shoulder brushing his. “Leave, Julian.”

Julian studied them for a moment before shaking his head. “Careful, Vivien. You trust too easily.”

With that, he turned and walked out. Xavier blew out a breath,.

“That guy’s a real joy.”

Vivien barely reacted. “Julian doesn’t like when I do things that don’t benefit him.”

Xavier crossed his arms. “So why are you doing this? You don’t know me, and you definitely don’t owe me.”

Vivien met his gaze, something unreadable in her eyes. “I have my reasons.”

He wanted to push, but something told him she wasn’t ready to share them. Instead, he exhaled.

“All right. I’ll take the job.”

For the first time, her expression softened. “Good.”

As they walked back to find Lily, Xavier couldn’t shake the feeling that this was more than just a job, and that Vivien Laurent was far more complicated than she let on.
