A Struggling Dad Waited With A Woman For A Tow Truck, Never Guessing She Was A Billionaire Falling
The Encounter and the Secret
Travis Okonnell had just dropped his son off at daycare when the minivan coughed jerked and died right in the middle of the grocery store parking lot. “Come on,” he muttered hitting the steering wheel like that would bring the engine back to life.
“It didn’t,” he climbed out and popped the hood though he had no clue what he was even looking for. The sky above was turning a moody gray and of course his phone was at 3%.
He sighed and leaned against the van arms crossed already calculating how much a toe would set him back and how much he didn’t have. “Looks like you’re having a rough morning,” the voice came from a few feet away.
A woman stood near the curb dressed in a black sweater and jeans holding a steaming cup of coffee. She wasn’t flashy but there was something polished about her.
Her long dark hair was tied in a low ponytail and she had this calm composed energy that didn’t fit the chaos around her. Travis gave her a tired half smile.
“Yeah just one of those days car trouble dead as my bank account,” he said with a dry laugh. “Waiting on a toe could be a while”.
She glanced down at her phone. “Looks like mine’s on the way too my car’s over there”.
She motioned to a sleek black sedan a few spots down. “Battery gave out we might be stuck here together for a bit”.
He chuckled. “Guess misery loves company.” She walked over and sat on the curb beside him like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“I’m Amelia amelia West.” “Travis O’Connell,” he said shaking her hand. “You from around here?”
“Sort of.” She sipped her coffee and looked up at the sky. “Visiting needed a break”.
“From what?” “Work life people asking me for things”.
She smiled but there was something tired behind it. “You?” “Working two jobs raising a 5-year-old and trying not to lose my mind”.
Amelia looked over interested. “You have a kid?” “Yeah Wesley he’s in daycare right now”.
“Loves dinosaurs hates bedtime and thinks I can fix anything.” Travis paused then added “He’s why I keep going”.
“That’s sweet,” she said softly. “Sounds like you’re doing your best”.
He nodded grateful she didn’t hit him with the usual pity or well-meaning advice. “Trying doesn’t pay daycare though”.
They sat in silence for a moment the wind picking up. Amelia offered him her extra coffee cup from the drink carrier beside her.
“I always get two just in case,” she said. He hesitated. “I can’t take it”.
“Please.” He took it wrapping his hands around the warmth. “Thanks”.
“No problem.” She glanced at him sideways. “So what do you do?”
“Construction and nights at a bar downtown sleep when I can.” “That’s a lot”.
He shrugged. “Life doesn’t really give you the option to slow down”.
Amelia looked at him for a long second something unreadable in her expression. “You ever think of doing something else?”
“Like what i don’t have a degree and I can’t gamble stability when I’ve got a kid depending on me.” She nodded.
They lapsed into another silence the kind that wasn’t uncomfortable just real. After a few minutes he asked “What do you do?”
“I work in finance,” she said simply. That was an understatement.
Amelia West was the sole heir to the West Holdings empire worth billions. But she didn’t say that not here not now.
She was watching a man who barely had $2 to rub together offer his last granola bar to a squirrel. “Finance huh,” he said.
“That sounds clean.” She laughed. “It has its moments”.
Just then a tow truck pulled into the parking lot stopping first by Amelia’s car. She stood up and dusted off her jeans.
“Guess that’s me.” Travis stood too suddenly not ready for the moment to end.
“Thanks for the coffee.” “Thanks for the company,” she said.
“It’s been a while since I talked to someone who didn’t want something from me.” “You’re easy to talk to,” he said sincerely.
She paused then scribbled something on a napkin and handed it to him. “In case you ever want to talk again”.
He looked down. It wasn’t a number just an address. “Come by sometime,” she said then turned and walked off.
