A Struggling Single Mom Asked a Stranger for a Ride—And Never Imagined He Was a Millionaire CEO…
An Unexpected Opportunity
Over the next weeks, Clare couldn’t stop thinking about Nathaniel Ross. She thought about his kindness and his genuine concern.
She looked him up online, learning about his company and his reputation as a fair and ethical businessman. She found photos of him at charity events, always impeccably dressed and usually alone.
One evening, her car had broken down again. She had been forced to take three buses with Lucas to get to work.
Clare found herself looking at Nathaniel’s business card. Before she could talk herself out of it, she called the number.
“Nathaniel Ross,” he answered, his voice professional.
“Hi. This is Clare Mitchell. We met a few weeks ago; you gave me a ride in the rain.”
“Clare! Of course I remember. Is everything okay?”
“Yes. No. I don’t know.” Clare felt tears threaten. “I’m sorry to bother you. I shouldn’t have called.”
“You’re not bothering me. Tell me what’s wrong.”
So she did. She told him about her car dying again and the repair costs she couldn’t afford.
She spoke of the constant stress and exhaustion. She felt like she was barely holding it together.
“Where are you right now?” Nathaniel asked.
“Home. In my apartment.”
“Stay there. I’m coming over.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I want to. Give me your address.”
An hour later, Nathaniel arrived at Clare’s door. He was wearing jeans and a button-down shirt, looking more casual than she had seen him.
He carried bags of takeout food and looked genuinely happy to see her. “I hope Chinese is okay. I wasn’t sure what you liked.”
They sat on Clare’s worn couch and ate while Lucas slept in his bassinet. Nathaniel asked about her day, her life, and her dreams.
Clare found herself talking more openly than she had with anyone in months. “Can I ask you something?” she said eventually.
“Why are you here, really? You’re a CEO. You must have a million things you could be doing.” “Why waste time with me?”
“You’re not a waste of time, Clare. You’re…”
Nathaniel paused, choosing his words carefully. “You’re the most genuine person I’ve met in years.”
“Everyone in my world wants something: business deals, money, connections.” “You’re the only person who’s ever tried to refuse my help. Do you know how refreshing that is?”
“I just don’t want to take advantage.”
“You’re not. But I’d like to help more if you let me.”
Nathaniel leaned forward. “I have a proposal.”
“Ross Enterprises has an early childhood development center for our employees’ children. It’s on-site at our headquarters.”
“We need teachers. Real teachers who actually care about kids, not just people going through the motions.”
“The position comes with full benefits. That includes tuition reimbursement for continuing education.”
Clare’s heart started pounding. “Are you offering me a job?”
“I’m offering you an interview. I want you to meet our director and show her your ideas about early childhood education.”
“If she thinks you’re a fit, the job is yours. But Clare, I won’t use my position to force her decision.”
“This has to be legitimate. You have to earn the position.”
“I will. I’ll work harder than anyone, I promise.”
“I know you will.”
The interview happened three days later. Clare met with Sarah Chen, the director of the child care center.
They talked for two hours about teaching philosophies, child development theories, and creative learning strategies. By the end, Sarah was beaming.
“You’re hired. When can you start?”
“Really?”
“Really. Nathaniel told me you were special, but you exceeded my expectations.” “You have a real gift, Clare. I’d be foolish not to hire you.”
