A Teenage Drifter Walked Up To Our Ranch Begging For Work — What He Did That Night Saved Our Entire Livelihood
Part 2
“Can I help you?”
Tyler asked, his voice cutting through the freezing air.
Dan stared down at him from his expensive roan, looking amused.
“I’m here to speak with Craig,” the developer said, condescendingly.
“Craig isn’t available,” Tyler replied, not moving an inch.
“I manage operations here now, so if you have business with this ranch, you have business with me.”
The two hired men flanking Dan shifted uncomfortably.
Here was a nineteen-year-old kid with no gun, unfazed by their intimidation.
“You’re misunderstanding your position,” Dan warned.
“There are three of us,” Tyler pointed out, perfectly calm, “and one of me at this fence.”
He gestured slowly toward the dark outline of our porch.
“But there is a man inside that house with a hunting rifle who has been waiting for an excuse to use it.”
Tyler locked eyes with the wealthy developer.
“Do you want this land enough to bleed for it tonight?”
The wind howled down off the mountain, filling the heavy silence.
Dan stared at the kid, then glanced at our dark window, where Craig’s silhouette was clearly visible.
Muttering a curse, the developer jerked his reins and led his men away into the darkness.
Tyler waited until the sound of hooves faded completely before turning around.
Craig stepped out onto the porch, lowering the weapon.
He looked at this drifter with an expression I hadn’t seen on his face since our son passed away.
That night, Craig pulled out the good whiskey we kept hidden at the back of the cupboard.
He poured two glasses and slid one across the kitchen table.
“You stood your ground,” Craig said quietly.
Tyler stared at the amber liquid for a long moment.
“I lost my own father’s ranch two years ago,” the teenager confessed.
“I made bad decisions after he died, the bank took it, and I’ve thought about it every single day since.”
Tears pooled in the boy’s eyes, but he refused to look away.
“I don’t want to watch someone else lose their home.”
Craig swallowed hard, staring at the exhausted kid sitting in our kitchen.
“Work this land with me through the winter,” my husband offered, his voice thick.
“In the spring, if you still want to stay, I’ll draw up a partnership agreement for thirty percent of the operation.”
Tyler’s jaw dropped, shock replacing the grief.
“Why?” he whispered.
Craig smiled for the first time in years.
“Because this land deserves someone who will love it,” my husband answered.
We all sat around the table, feeling something shift in the atmosphere.
But as the brutal Colorado winter finally began to thaw months later, an unexpected envelope arrived in our mailbox.
That’s when I realized Tyler had been keeping one incredibly painful secret from us since the day he arrived.
What do you think he was hiding?
