Billionaire Kept His Feelings Hidden, Never Thought His Assistant Would Feel the Same
A New Partnership
The following Monday morning, Ruby arrived at the office earlier than usual. Uncertainty fluttered in her stomach. After the gala, they had spent the weekend together, talking for hours and exploring this new dimension of their relationship.
But now, walking into Ainsworth Global as both Lucas’s assistant and—what? “Girlfriend” seemed too casual a term for the depth of what they felt.
The office was quiet, as most employees were not due for another hour. Ruby settled at her desk, organizing the day’s schedule and preparing for the morning meeting.
When the elevator dinged, she looked up to see Lucas stepping out carrying two coffee cups.
“Good morning,” he said, setting one cup on her desk. “Double-shot vanilla latte, extra hot. Just how you like it.”
Ruby smiled, touched by the gesture. “You’ve never brought me coffee before.”
“I know,” Lucas replied. “It’s always been the other way around. I thought it was time I returned the favor.”
He glanced around the empty office, then leaned down to kiss her softly. “I missed you last night.”
“It was only a few hours,” Ruby laughed, though she’d felt the same way.
“Too long,” Lucas said simply. He straightened as the elevator announced the arrival of more employees. “We should talk about how to handle this at work.”
Ruby nodded. “I’ve been thinking about that. There are complications, like the fact that I’m your boss,” Lucas acknowledged.
“I’ve thought about that, too. What if you weren’t my assistant anymore?”
Ruby felt a pang of dismay. “You want me to quit?”
“No,” Lucas said quickly. “I want to promote you. You’ve been essentially running operations alongside me for years. I was thinking Chief Operating Officer.”
Ruby blinked in surprise. “COO, Lucas?”
“That’s a position you’re more than qualified for,” he finished. “This isn’t about us, Ruby. It’s about recognizing your contributions to Ainsworth Global. The fact that it would remove the direct reporting relationship is just a bonus.”
Before Ruby could respond, Lucas’s phone rang. He checked the screen and grimaced. “Tokyo partners. I have to take this. Think about it.”
Ruby nodded, watching as he disappeared into his office. COO of Ainsworth Global. It was a leap she’d never dared dream of, even though she knew the operations of the company inside and out.
Was Lucas right? Was she ready for that level of responsibility? More importantly, could they navigate the transition from boss and assistant to equals both professionally and personally?
The next few weeks were a whirlwind of adjustment. Ruby accepted the COO position after careful consideration. Lucas announced the promotion to the company with evident pride.
There were a few raised eyebrows when, two months later, they also announced their relationship. But most employees who had worked with them weren’t surprised.
“We all knew there was something there,” Ruby’s former assistant, now promoted to take her place, confided. “The way he looked at you when you weren’t watching—it was just a matter of time.”
Working together as executive peers rather than boss and assistant brought new dynamics to their relationship.
Ruby found her voice in board meetings, sometimes disagreeing with Lucas’s strategies. To her surprise, he seemed to relish it.
“I love watching you think,” he told her one night as they sat on his balcony overlooking the water. “You see angles I miss. Risks I overlook. We’re better together professionally and personally.”
“Even when I tell you your expansion timeline for the European routes is too aggressive?” Ruby teased, curling into his side.
“Especially then,” Lucas said, kissing the top of her head. “Though I still think I’m right about that one.”
Six months after the night of the charity gala, Lucas took Ruby to dinner at the small Italian restaurant where they’d had their first real date.
As they finished their tiramisu, Lucas seemed uncharacteristically nervous. “What’s on your mind?” Ruby asked, reaching across the table to take his hand. “You’ve been distracted all evening.”
Lucas took a deep breath. “Do you remember that drawer in my desk? The one I always kept locked?”
Ruby nodded. “The mysterious drawer I was never allowed to open, even when I organized everything else.”
“I want to show you what’s in it,” Lucas said, reaching into his pocket. He placed a small velvet box on the table between them.
Ruby’s eyes widened.
“Lucas—”
“I bought this six months before we got together,” he said softly. “I saw it and knew it was meant for you, even though I had no hope of ever giving it to you.”
With trembling fingers, Ruby opened the box to reveal the emerald ring. The stones were the exact color of her eyes, set in a delicate platinum band.
“It’s beautiful,” she whispered.
Lucas moved from his chair to kneel beside her. “Ruby Davies, you’ve been running my life for years and my heart for even longer.”
“Would you consider making that arrangement permanent and becoming my wife?”
Tears of joy filled Ruby’s eyes. “Yes,” she said, her voice strong and sure. “Yes, I will marry you, Lucas Ainsworth.”
As he slid the ring onto her finger and gathered her into his arms, Ruby marveled at the journey that had brought them here.
They had gone from professional boundaries to the deepest love she’d ever known. They moved from assistant to equal partner, and from hiding feelings to building a future together.
“What are you thinking?” Lucas asked, noticing her thoughtful expression.
“I’m thinking about all the times we almost said something but didn’t,” Ruby replied. “All the moments we nearly crossed that line but pulled back.”
Lucas smiled, stroking her cheek. “We got here in our own time. And now we have the rest of our lives to make up for those silent moments.”
“The rest of our lives,” Ruby repeated, leaning into his touch. “I like the sound of that.”
One year later, they stood hand in hand on the deck of the Ainsworth Emerald, the newest and most luxurious vessel in their fleet.
They watched the sun set over the Pacific. Their intimate wedding had taken place that morning in a seaside ceremony attended by close friends and family, followed by a reception on board.
“Mrs. Ainsworth,” Lucas said, his arms encircling her waist from behind as they gazed at the horizon. “I still can’t believe you’re my wife.”
“Believe it,” Ruby said, turning in his arms to face him. “Though I’m keeping Davies professionally. Chief Operating Officer Ruby Davies has a nice ring to it.”
“As does Ruby Davies Ainsworth personally,” Lucas agreed, kissing her softly. “However you want to be known, as long as you’re mine.”
“Always have been,” Ruby murmured against his lips. “Even when I was just your assistant. Even when I thought you’d never see me as more than that.”
“I always saw you,” Lucas said. “I was just afraid to show it.”
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold, Lucas and Ruby stood wrapped in each other’s arms.
The ship carried them forward into their future together. The sea stretched endlessly before them, much like the life they were building: vast with possibility, deep with meaning, and beautiful beyond measure.
For the billionaire who had kept his feelings hidden and the assistant who had never dared hope he might feel the same, this was just the beginning of their greatest adventure.
