Billionaire Pretends To Be A Regular Customer. He Falls For A Woman Who Has No Idea Who He Is.
Stepping Into the Moonlight
Natalie called in sick the next day. She could not pretend everything was normal. Liam was powerful, and she had been too blind to see it.
He had kept the truth from her. She spent the day pacing her apartment. By evening, she thought their connection was over. Then came a knock at her door.
Liam stood in the hallway, looking less composed than usual. He exhaled sharply.
“You weren’t at the cafe,” he said.
“I took the day off,” she replied.
“Because of me?” he asked. She did not deny it.
“Can I come in?” he asked finally. Natalie hesitated, then stepped aside.
Liam entered, his presence filling the small space like he belonged there. He glanced at her books and a vanilla candle. His eyes settled on her.
“I should have told you,” he said.
“Then why didn’t you?” Natalie folded her arms.
“Because I wanted you to like me for me,” he ran a hand through his hair.
“I did,” she frowned.
“Did you?” his gaze sharpened.
“You lied, Liam. By omission,” she looked away.
“I know. and I regret it,” his voice was quiet.
“I don’t even know who you are,” she said.
He stepped closer. “Yes, you do.”
“I know the man who orders black coffee,” she shook her head. “I don’t know the man with the personal driver and the small fortune.”
“I was afraid it would change things,” he said.
“I’m not upset that you’re rich,” she admitted. “I’m upset you didn’t trust me with the truth.”
Liam took another step. “I don’t care about any of that when I’m with you.”
Her breath hitched. She wanted to be angry, but her heart pounded. He reached for her hand, hesitant.
“Give me another chance,” he said. “Let me prove none of this was a lie.”
“Okay,” she whispered. Liam’s relief was instant.
He was waiting outside her building the next morning, leaning against a sleek car.
“You’re persistent,” she said.
“You agreed to give me a chance,” he quirked his mouth.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
“Somewhere you’ve never been before,” he replied.
He took her to a rooftop garden hidden in the city. String lights hung between towering plants. It felt like a secret.
“How does this even exist?” she asked.
“A friend owns the building,” Liam watched her. “I wanted to take you somewhere special.”
They sat at a small table near the edge. The air smelled of jasmine.
“My life is complicated,” Liam said, pouring wine. “With you, it wasn’t.”
“I still don’t know if I fit into your world,” she admitted.
“You don’t have to,” he said firmly. “If you don’t want to be a part of my world, I’ll meet you in yours.”
“Let’s figure this out together,” she said, meeting his gaze.
Days passed. Liam became a warm presence in her routine. He made sure she felt seen, picking her up after work or giving her a new book.
One evening, he looked hesitant at her apartment.
“I need to tell you something,” he said. “My company is hosting a Gala next weekend. I want you to come.”
Natalie swallowed. This was the collision of their worlds. She took a slow breath.
“Okay,” she said. “I’ll go. But promise you won’t let me make a fool of myself.”
“You could never make a fool of yourself,” he murmured.
The night of the Gala arrived. The Grand Ballroom was like a dream, with crystal chandeliers and liquid moonlight. Natalie wore a breathtaking gown Liam had chosen.
Liam’s hand was at the small of her back. “You’re stunning,” he whispered.
A tall woman approached. “Natalie, is it? I’m Elena, Liam’s godmother.”
“I wasn’t expecting Liam to bring someone tonight,” Elena said smoothly.
“I don’t see why that would be surprising,” Liam’s grip tightened.
“Because you’ve never brought anyone before,” Elena tilted her head. “Do you know what you’re getting into?”
Natalie realized this was a test. She could feel the room’s scrutiny. She lifted her chin.
“I think the better question is whether your world is ready for me,” Natalie said.
Silence followed. Then, Elena smiled. “I like her.”
She left, and Liam pulled Natalie onto the dance floor. The music swelled.
“What just happened?” Natalie asked.
“You passed,” he smiled.
Natalie realized she was becoming a part of his world. She wasn’t scared anymore. Wherever Liam was, she wanted to be there too.
