Billionaire Traveled Solo to Remote Island, Never Expected Tour Guide Would Navigate Him to Love

Arrival on Khalani Island

The crashing waves nearly drowned out the sound of Blake Carson’s phone as the helicopter descended toward the small landing pad on Khalani Island. This wasn’t how he’d planned to spend the mandatory two-week break his board had forced upon him.

But after his company’s stock soared past the billion-dollar mark, they’d insisted their workaholic CEO take time to decompress before launching their newest product line.

“We’ll be landing in 2 minutes, Mr. Carson,” the pilot announced over the headset.

Blake nodded, already regretting his decision to come to this remote speck in the Pacific. He chosen Kelani specifically because it was private, undeveloped, and most importantly had spotty cell service, ensuring his executive team couldn’t easily contact him.

Now staring down at the lush green mountains and pristine beaches, he wondered if he’d made a terrible mistake. Two weeks of solitude suddenly seemed like a prison sentence. The helicopter touched down on a small clearing near a modest collection of bungalows.

As the rotors slowed, Blake gathered his limited luggage: one suitcase and his laptop bag. He’d packed light, planning to spend most of his time working on the business plan for his pharmaceutical company’s expansion, board’s orders be damned.

As he ducked under the still-spinning blades, a woman approached from the direction of the main building. The wind whipped her dark hair around her face, and she held up a hand to shield her eyes from the dust kicked up by the helicopter.

“Mr. Carson,” she called over the noise. “Welcome to Khalani Island”.

Blake squinted at her as he approached. She was younger than he’d expected, probably in her late 20s, with sun-kissed skin and bright eyes that crinkled when she smiled.

“I’m Zara Ellis,” she continued when he reached her. “I’ll be your guide during your stay with us”.

“Guide?” Blake frowned. “I didn’t request a guide”.

Her smile dimmed slightly.

“It’s included in the premium package you booked. I’m here to ensure you experience the best Khalani has to offer”.

Blake resisted the urge to tell her the only thing he wanted to experience was peace and quiet.

“I appreciate that, Miss Ellis, but I’m here to relax and catch up on some reading”.

The lie came easily.

“Of course,” she replied, her professional demeanor unruffled. “Let me show you to your bungalow and you can settle in. If you change your mind, I’m available whenever you need me”.

Blake followed her down a winding path lined with tropical flowers. The main resort was small but elegant, clearly designed for those seeking exclusivity rather than amenities.

“We have only five guest bungalows,” Zara explained. “You’re our only visitor this week, so you’ll have plenty of privacy”.

That at least was good news.

“And the Wifi,” he asked.

Zara’s pause was brief but telling.

“It’s available,” she said carefully, “but quite unreliable”. “The storm season has damaged some of our equipment. We’re working on repairs”.

Blake felt a tightening in his chest. No reliable internet meant no work.

“How unreliable?”.

“You might get a few minutes each day, but I wouldn’t count on it for anything important”.

She stopped at a beautiful bungalow perched on a slight rise, offering a stunning view of the turquoise ocean.

“This is yours”.

The accommodation was impressive, spacious with high ceilings, elegant furnishings, and floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the breathtaking panorama. A private plunge pool graced the deck, which extended toward the beach.

“Dinner is served in the main pavilion from 6:00 to 9:00,” Zara continued. “Or we can arrange for private dining here if you prefer”.

“This will be fine”.

Blake set his laptop bag down with more force than necessary.

“I’ll see you at dinner”.

If Zara was offended by his dismissal, she didn’t show it.

“Enjoy your afternoon, Mr. Carson. If you need anything, just call the front desk”.

After she left, Blake immediately tried to connect to the Wi-Fi. As predicted, the signal was so weak it was practically non-existent. He tried his cell phone: one bar occasionally, two, but not enough to maintain a reliable connection to his email.

Frustration mounted as he realized he was truly cut off from his company for the first time in 15 years. By evening, restlessness had driven him to the dining pavilion earlier than he’d intended.

The open-air structure was beautiful, with a thatched roof and spectacular views of the sunset. A handful of staff members prepared for dinner service, but no other guests were present. Zara appeared at his side as he examined the small bar.

“Can I recommend the island rum punch? It’s our specialty”.

“Scotch neat,” he replied, though immediately regretted his curtness.

It wasn’t her fault he was stranded here.

“Please”.

She nodded and prepared his drink with practiced ease.

“How are you finding the bungalow?”.

“It’s beautiful,” he admitted.

“The whole island is beautiful, but not what you had in mind for your vacation”.

She handed him the glass. Blake took a sip before answering.

“I don’t really take vacations”.

“So I gathered from your assistant who booked the reservation,” she mentioned. “Something about a forced sabbatical”.

Blake’s eyebrows rose.

“Did she now? What else did she share about me?”.

“Only that you would likely be a challenge,” Zara said with a hint of amusement. “And that I shouldn’t be offended when you refused my services as a guide”.

Despite himself, Blake smiled.

“Deianne knows me too well”.

“It’s still early in your stay. You might find that Khalani has more to offer than you expect”.

Blake looked at her more carefully. Zara Ellis didn’t fit his idea of a typical tour guide. There was an intelligence in her eyes and a confidence in her bearing that suggested deeper waters.

“What’s your story, Miss Ellis? How does someone like you end up as a tour guide on a remote island?”.

“Someone like me?” she echoed with a raised eyebrow.

“You seem overqualified”.

She laughed, the sound genuine and warm.

“I have a doctorate in marine biology. I came to Khalani 3 years ago to study the coral reef system. Guiding tourists helps fund my research”.

Blake was intrigued despite himself.

“And what has your research found?”.

For the next hour, as the sun disappeared below the horizon and stars appeared in the clear sky, Zara told him about the unique marine ecosystem surrounding Kalani.
