Billionaire Woman Bet a Single Dad Wouldn’t Last 5 Minutes — He Stayed All Night
The Encounter and the Swap
The introduction meeting went better than Mark had dared hope. Eliza arrived at their apartment precisely on time, dressed in what was clearly her version of casual.
She wore dark jeans that probably cost more than Mark’s rent and a cashmere sweater. Lily was having a “good day”.
This meant she was willing to engage with this stranger who had entered her carefully ordered world. “You have a very organized home,” Eliza commented.
She noticed the color-coded calendar on the refrigerator, the labeled bins of toys, and the detailed schedule posted on Lily’s bedroom door.
“Structure helps Lily feel secure,” Mark explained. “When she knows what to expect she can focus on other things.”
Eliza nodded, watching as Lily methodically arranged her crayons by color before beginning to draw. “What are you drawing Lily?” Eliza asked, keeping a respectful distance.
Lily didn’t look up. “A stegosaurus. They have 17 plates on their backs.”
“That’s very precise knowledge,” Eliza said, with genuine admiration in her voice. “Lily knows everything about dinosaurs,” Mark said proudly. “She’s been teaching me.”
To his surprise, Eliza knelt down to Lily’s level. “I don’t know much about dinosaurs,” she admitted. “Perhaps you could teach me something too.”
Lily glanced up briefly, a rare moment of eye contact. “The Stegosaurus had a brain the size of a walnut,” she shared.
“Fascinating,” Eliza said, and she actually seemed to mean it. “Is that your favorite dinosaur?”.
Lily shook her head. “Triceratops. They protect their babies.”
Something shifted in Eliza’s expression, a softening around the eyes and a slight parting of the lips. For a moment, she looked almost vulnerable.
“That’s a good reason to like them,” she said quietly. The visit lasted 30 minutes, exactly as scheduled.
As Eliza prepared to leave, she addressed Lily directly. “Thank you for letting me visit your home Lily. I promise to follow all your rules when I come back on Friday.”
Lily nodded solemnly. “Don’t touch the dinosaurs without asking.” “I won’t,” Eliza promised.
In the hallway outside, Mark was surprised when Eliza extended her hand. “Your daughter is remarkable,” she said.
“Yes she is,” Mark agreed, shaking her hand. “I’ll see you Friday Mr Jenkins. May the best person win.”
As she walked away, Mark couldn’t help but wonder if there was more to Eliza Montgomery than the cold billionaire persona she presented to the world. Friday arrived with a mixture of anticipation and dread.
Mark spent the day preparing Lily, reviewing her schedule, and reminding her that Ms Montgomery would be staying with her while he went to an important meeting.
“Will you come back?” Lily asked, a rare note of anxiety in her voice. “Always,” Mark promised, hugging her close. “I always come back to you Lilypad.”
At precisely 5:00 p.m. the doorbell rang. Eliza stood in the hallway, now dressed in slacks and a simple blouse.
She looked still elegant but more practical than her usual attire. “Ms Montgomery,” Mark greeted her. “Eliza please,” she said, stepping inside.
“If I’m going to be reading bedtime stories we should be on a first-name basis,” she suggested. Mark nodded.
“Eliza, thank you for being punctual. Lily appreciates timeliness.” “As do I,” Eliza replied, setting down a small overnight bag.
“Shall we review the schedule once more?” she asked. For the next 15 minutes, Mark walked Eliza through Lily’s evening routine.
